Will this reduce the cost of new Ford Rangers in Cambodia ?

Cambodia to host Ford Motor assembly factory

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has approved a multi million dollar investment project of the Ford Motor Company

The US$21-million Ford Motor Cambodia’s assembly plant project was revealed in a virtual meeting held on Sept. 14 between Pursat provincial governor and representatives of CDC/Cambodian Investment Board and the investment firm – RMA Automotive (Cambodia) Co., Ltd.

According to the Pursat Provincial Governor H.E. Mao Thonin, the assembly factory will be built on an area of over 4 hectares in Savoan village, Sna Ansa commune of Krakor district, some 159 kilometres from Phnom Penh capital.

The plant will assemble mainly Ford Ranger and Ford Everest, with RMA initial investment of US$21 million.

In this phase, the firm plans to assemble a total of 4,500 vehicles in the first year to supply the demand of the Cambodian market. The factory will help create up to 500 jobs for the locals during the production line.

The factory will contribute to improving the living standards and alleviating poverty of the people in the province, especially generating jobs for local people, H.E. Mao Thonin said. AKP

Yeah, they assemble the Everest and the Exploder for years and years in a plant in SEZ

My guess is, being as it's a KT article, nobody did any research and they just assumed this plant in Pursat would be the first in the country.

The previous plant in SHV closed years ago, after the full integration with ASEAN, when there were no more tax incentives to have a domestic plant. So, this is a new facility, and Ford's only in the country. However, there are some others, such as SsangYong - but their numbers are way smaller than what Ford's will be (Ford commands a 42% market share of the new car market).

Does this signal that such domestic-assembled cars will be cheaper? Will this effectively eliminate the notoriously sky-high vehicle import ពន្ធ ?

Another example of a global company following the Japanese model of build locally-sell locally. Add in the current trend of decoupling... oops sorry.. de-risking... from China we can expect to see more of this.

Cars will be assembled with parts that are imported (high cost of transport and logistics) and probably also highly taxed
It remains to be seen if the productivity (and quality standards) of the Cambodian plant is at par with other production sites to allow lower prices.
work is for people who cant find truffles
