I assumed everything in Otres had been knocked down & destroyed

Do they still have their beachside restaurant ?

I've had several pizza's there over the years, as well as their blueberry ice-cream :)
Still there but in the village not beachside - work also slowed down in the area

Hardly anything exists on the beach side of the road. Every half km there's an annoyingly pathetic coffee shop and public toilet, but no businesses beach side.. you have to look through what is at times a busy, congested road if you want to relax with a cocktail watching the waves.

They've totally ripped the soul out of that place.

Tragic.

Locals don't think so. Sihanoukville was the most visited town last year. And to be honest I prefer the new beach also. Much cleaner too. And the public toilet is great addition. Can do day trip to beach and wash the sand and salt before hopping back to car.

Yeah fill your Esky with cheap cans and throw it on the back of the Ranger, let's go! And dont forget to contribute as little as possible to the local economy, whilst leaving all your trash everywhere... Gotta keep those beach caretakers busy

I don't know, when I went there last month, the local beach vendors seemed to be doing a roaring trade. It's not like they don't benefit from day trippers.

And as Alex noticed, the local beach vendors and restaurants are doing just fine with day trippers. And many are staying over night too. Personally i spend 3-6 nights every month there now days.
