Gold Sellers Victims of Armed Robbery in Phnom Penh this Morning

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): A border policeman suffered head injuries during an armed hold-up committed at 7:30am this morning, on May 18, 2023, in the area of Old Stung Meanchey Market, Group 1, Meanchey 2 Village, Sangkat Stung Meanchey 1, Khan Meanchey, Phnom Penh.
The victim has been identified as Un Hiek, male, 55 years old, occupation: Border Police Officer, living in a house at the above address with his wife, Ung Phalla, 52, who sells gold at Stung Meanchey market.

According to the victim, he was carrying gold, platinum, and 150,000 Khmer Riel in cash from their house to his wife's gold stall in the old Stung Meanchey market, when four suspects on two motorcycles armed with a handgun followed him, pulled out a gun, hit him in the head, and grabbed his bag of valuables. The robbers fired off three shots at a group of traders without hitting anyone and fled on motorcycles.

Police departments from all over Phnom Penh have been alerted to be on the lookout for the thieves, and local policemen and Ministry of Interior officers went to the scene to examine the security cameras in order to identify the robbers and hunt them down.

8 arrested for $20,000 armed gold seller attack in Phnom Penh
8 ruffians have been arrested for their part in the brutal robbery of a gold seller in Phnom Penh earlier this month

The original incident took place behind the old Steung Meanchey market, Sangkat Steung Meanchey, Khan Meanchey on May 18, 2023

5 suspects ambushed a gold-seller who was on her way to the market and stole at least 12 ounces of gold, platinum and over 1 million riel in money

Reports at the time state that the robbers were armed and fired a number of shots to intimidate their victim

After an investigation, the light criminal bureau of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police arrested 8 suspects Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu and Kampong Cham over the course of the last 3 days

Police seized firearms as well as some of the stolen goods.

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: The Investigating Judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on June 2, 2023, arrested 8 armed robbers and sent them to Prey Sar Prison for pretrial detention,in the case of a robbery of money and jewelry from a gold trader in Stung Meanchey Market worth more than 200,000 US dollars on May 18, 2023.

The eight accused men were charged by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court with aggravated theft and unauthorized use of firearms, and each person faces between five and 10 years in prison if convicted.
They were arrested by the Phnom Penh Municipal Police and other local forces between May 2-30 in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu and Kampong Cham provinces.

The locals all know each other and each other business. Non locals, even Khmer, stick out.

Missus’ best friend’s house got robbed a while back. Chinese gangsters followed and then cased the house. After the robbery, they got lost in the village trying to escape.

Lost Chinese gangsters in a Khmer village stick out pretty good too. They were soon caught by the police.
