Missing Cows, Mysterious Footprints, and Abandoned Shoes...
There Go the Cows, But Where are the Police ?
Cambodia News(Battambang): On the morning of 18 April 2023, a case of some missing cows occurred in Kork Punley village, Sangkat O'Mal, Battambang city. The owner of the stolen cows asked the local police to investigate, but he was unhappy with their attitude, which he found unprofessional.
According to the owner, he tied his cows to the back fence at 11 pm on 17 April with several other herds of cattle as he has done for years. After securing the cows, he went to sleep.
But the next day, on the morning of 18 April, he woke up to find two of his cows were missing !
The owner of the cows confirmed that he and his family then followed the footprints of the stolen livestock, which led through the fields behind the village onto the highway about 300 meters away. While following the cows’ footprints, his brother suddenly found a pair of sandals, suspected to be the thieves' shoes, which had been left near the fence behind the house. The owner then immediately reported the theft and the discovery of this evidence to the authorities.
After receiving complaints from the owner of the cow, a police officer from the O'Mal Administration Post came to inspect the barn. However, the owner of the cow said he was upset because the officer did not seem very interested; he did not stay long, only asked a few questions and made some notes and inspected the shoes that were suspected to belong to the thief, but left without taking the sandals away as evidence.
Cases of cattle theft are not new in Battambang, but the authorities don’t seem to have the will or the means to prevent or investigate the reported cases, because cattle rustling is now a large-scale activity, sometimes involving trucks carrying away whole herds of stolen livestock. Villagers who own cows are now worried about the safety of their beasts, because although the cases of theft are increasing, the authorities are not doing much to put a stop to this activity.

CEO News: Sorry, the report was not clear that this was a different case altogether, but was posted here as an example of the increasing cases of cattle-rustling that farmers are complaining about. I have edited it now, so hope that makes things clearer.Tootsfriend wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 3:55 pmQuote,CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 2:07 pm CowNapper Caught!
A modest start to a crackdown on the plague of cow thefts, with the arrest of a man in another recent case of cow-napping. (Not the same case as the OP).

7 Buffalo Stolen by Thieves Overnight
Cambodia News, (Oddar Meanchey Province): Seven buffaloes were stolen from their barn by unidentified thieves and loaded into a truck at around 1 to 2 am on May 4, 2023, in Thmey village, Samrong city, Oddar Meanchey province.
According to the buffalo owner, Phon Sarin, a 50-year-old man, he had 19 buffaloes, which foraged in the daytime, and were kept in pens overnight. But when the farmer went to release the animals in the morning, he saw that seven of his animals were missing. After the buffalo disappeared, he went to look for in the forest where he found buffalo hoof prints and areas of the cassava field were trampled with traces of the buffaloes for about 1 kilometer. After that were some tire marks, so the owner clearly concluded that the thieves took the animals out of the barn, loaded them on to a truck after the forest, and drove away into the night.
Phon Sarin went to the village to complain to the village chief, who called everyone together. According to a man living near the buffalo enclosure, at about 1 o'clock that night, when he woke up to check on his sick child, he also heard dogs barking, but did not pay any attention. Later, he said he heard a noise of one or two motorbikes, but he went back to bed. It was only the next day that he found out that it was likely he had heard the buffalo-rustlers in action.
Local people are concerned because this is the first time that there has been livestock stollen from their village.
