I think, the lack of money is the root of all evil.

It looks like the first sentence is thrown in to make the second sentence look like an afterthought.

Well, now she knows where he is and why he hasn't paid her. She also knows where he will be for the next seven years and can work out for herself that the money will never be paid. That's called closure.

According to Swiss Law she will get a nice widow pension from the Swiss government. If she was married.

That's the thing. Was she legally married to him or just a 'buddha' wedding? And even if legal in Cambodia would the Swiss authorities accept it?

If the marriage was a legal one she is entitled to the pension. You must be married for some years AFAIK.
