Cambodia News, (Kandal Province): Police from Khsach Kandal District Police Inspectorate on May 30, 2023, arrested a MFI official in connection with the embezzlement of R 39,690,000 [about US$9,600], that he allegedly pocketed and gambled away, instead of handing it over to the Amret Microfinance Institution.

According to Khsach Kandal District Police, the suspect is Seang Thearith, male, 29 years old, and has been working for Amret for more than 2 years, receiving interest and principal from customers to pay to the bank, located in Prek Tamak Commune, Khsach Kandal District, Kandal Province.

On April 8, 2023, the microfinance official received money from 17 customers totaling R39,690,000 (thirty-nine million, six hundred and ninety thousand riels), which he used to place bets on football matches. He lost the total amount of money, and was eventually exposed and arrested for theft this week. The suspect has currently been sent to the Khsach Kandal District Police Inspectorate for questioning.
