Ready for the rains ?

Rainy Season to Begin in Second Week of May
AKP Phnom Penh, April 24, 2023 --

This year, the rainy season is expected to start in the second week of May, according to the second long-term weather forecast by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology released on Sunday.

The rainy season will bring from low to moderate rainfalls along with thunder, lightning, and gusts, the same source pointed out, adding that during the rainy season there would be a short dry season from early July to early August.

The 2023 rainy season would end in the first week of November, underlined the new weather forecast.

The ministry took the opportunity to urge the public, especially those living far from water sources, to continue conserving and saving water for necessary use.

I hope they sent Mother Nature this memo so she can follow their plan.

Drought Forecast
However, in Cambodia, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has issued its second long-term weather forecast for 2023 – and it says hot weather will continue until mid-May, later than expected, and with less rain anticipated than in 2022

It said weather patterns were being impacted by the El Nino heat phenomenon, which is currently transitioning between El Nino and La Nina. The resulting heat is expected to last until well into August.

As a result, the rainy season will arrive in the second week of May, later than 2022, with only light to moderate and scattered rainfall. From August to September, only light to moderate rainfall and partly moderate rainfall is expected.

Importantly, the Cambodian ministry added that rainfall is expected to be “20 percent to 30 percent lower than the average for many years,” which effectively means a return to drought conditions.

“In the rainy season of 2023, Cambodia will face the risk of a dry season that can last from early July to early August,” the ministry said.

MOWRAM Calls for High Vigilance for Possible Natural Phenomena
AKP Phnom Penh, May 23, 2023 --
The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) has appealed to the public to heighten their vigilance for possible natural phenomena this week.

In a new weather forecast released this morning, the ministry warned of rainfall, accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusts across the country from May 24 to 30, 2023.

For the temperature, during the said period, it would vary between 25 and 36 degrees Celsius for the central lowland areas, and from 24 to 35 degrees Celsius for the highland areas, said the same source.

In coastal areas, MOWRAM added, the temperature would be between 25 and 34 degrees Celsius.
