How long does it take?

Post by orken »

Hey All!

I'm here in the UK planning to move to Cambodia to teach English. I already have 1 year of experience, but not degree. I'm not too worried about finding work, I know that it will be difficult; I'm black. That hasn't held me back before with finding work abroad. I'm just wondering about how long will it take to find gainful employment. I've been reading some blogs concerning black people there, although, they were mostly from Africa. I would just like to know the average time it would take to find employment. Oh yeah, have you worked with any foreigners who weren't white?

Had a fascinating discussion the other day with an American guy of Asian descent, taking about employment racism (against non-white expats) in Cambodia. While I was talking with him another white expat (lady) I didn't know came over and tried repeatedly to strike up a conversation, excluding this guy with body language and nonverbal cues despite me making it clear I was already having a conversation. The american guy and I shared meaningful eye rolls and kept talking.

All the very best with your search for employment.

a) it's going to be difficult for you to find a job and will take considerably more time
b) they are going to pay you lower wages
c) probably you will have to work in the countryside for some shit school or university

Cambodia (and other Asian Countries) equals racism pure........and they are not ashamed of showing it !!!!!

I wish you luck.

So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

I don't think there's a huge bias against black people anymore. Well, sort of... If you sound like 50 cent and speak like you're from Compton, then it might be a bit hard. But if you have a decent enough vocabulary and are well-spoken, then I don't see it being ad much of a hindrance as a few years ago. I'd be more worried about not having a degree. But anyways, I'll let other people in the know give better advice.

^ Valid stuff.

While I definitely think it will be more of a challenge for you to land a teaching gig add a black man, it's far from impossible.

Luckily there are slacker white guys that you can beat in other areas.

Dress better than them for interviews. Some people hand out CV's dressed like a backpacker. Then, if they land an interview, come sweating in a shitty shirt that looks like they took out of their dirty clothes pile. Dress a professional as possible.

Make sure you have a mighty fine CV. I have seen some hilarious CV's from foreigners, from scratched out contact info to sob stories about why they left their last job in the West, LoL. Some attach pictures of them wearing casual clothes, etc.

Make sure you try to speak to the director. Two of the schools I taught at would be glad to quickly meet someone dropping off CV's if the person asked and they had time.

And make some friends when you get here. Fellow teachers will be able to tell you exactly who's hiring at that very moment.

Cambodians are racist when it comes to talk about black and white. They seem to overvalue white people. If you ask 10 students between white and black teacher which one do they prefer they will say white. There are some stereotypes about black. Anyway I hope you can get a job when you are here. Note some local teacher of English might face even harder situation when applying for teaching job. :)
