Hanoi (VNA) - Vietravel Airlines, a member of Vietravel Corporation, on May 5 inked an aircraft lease agreement with Cambodia Airways, a step forward in expanding its fleet as planned for the third quarter of this year.

Under the agreement, the Vietnamese carrier will receive an Airbus A319 on May 20, raising its fleet to four, and two others in July.

Vu Duc Bien, a representative from Vietravel Airlines, said the event is expected to create a turning point in the carrier’s development, towards expanding its domestic and international routes.

Currently, Vietravel Airlines, which made its debut in late 2020, is operating flights between HCM City/Hanoi and Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Phu Quoc, and between HCM City/Hanoi and Bangkok (Thailand), along with charter flights between Daegu (the Republic of Korea) and Cam Ranh.

With the new planes, it expects to launch more domestic and international flights from/to Cam Ranh and Da Nang in the third quarter, and charter flights to China, Taiwan (China), the RoK and Japan.

As of the first quarter of 2023, Vietravel Airlines had operated over 11,600 flights safely and carried close to 2.5 million passengers,
with an average occupancy rate of 93.7%./.

Prices to the island of Phu Quoc are up, visitor numbers are down...

Phu Quoc seeks solutions to lure back tourists
By Duong Dong October 15, 2023 | 05:00 am PT
Officials and businesses are looking for ways to save Phu Quoc's tourism, with the number of visitors dipping sharply and many firms suffering from losses.

At a meeting between the authorities of Kien Giang Province, home to the city island of Phu Quoc, and tourism businesses on Saturday, it was stated that the high air ticket prices to the island are one of the reasons for the drop in the number of visitors.

Le Thi Hai Chau, general secretary of the Phu Quoc Tourism Development Investment Association, said many tourism businesses have reported losses.

For the National Day holiday on September 1-4, the island received more than 19,000 visitors, down nearly 40% over the same period last year, while the room occupation rate only reached about 27%.

Chau recommended that airlines need to stabilize airfare prices, while tourism businesses will have to adjust their service and room rates.

A representative of Vietjet Air said for the first post-pandemic year of 2022, flights to Phu Quoc bounced back with about 40 flights per day and up to 150 flights at its peak.

However, this year, the airline has operated just 26 flights per day on average, which has affected revenues and pushed airfares up. The representative said tourism businesses need to review the products they are providing as well as service prices to retain customers.

"We are willing to work with tourism businesses and local authorities to stimulate demand for visiting the island," the representative said.

Phu Quoc chairman Huynh Quang Hung said airlines should come up with more reasonable ticket prices that could ensure benefits for all parties.

Phu Quoc is such an oddity geographically. A long sea crossing to Ha Tien and then a long road journey to big population centers in Vietnam. They do need air traffic to make it work.
OTOH, a very short distance by sea from the coast just west of Kampot. Could this be the future for Phu Quoc?

FWIW...Phu Quoc was annexed, colonized, seized, from Cambodia relatively recently, hence its remoteness from Vietnam and proximity to Cambodia....Literally West of Phnom Penh.

It's the other way around, the Khmer Rouge took the island for a few days in 1975 after South Vietnamese government fell, but Vietnam quickly sent troops to take it back.

That's the common narrative, however there is little or no evidence that it was ever inhabited by Khmer people.
