Truck Noises Keep Residents Awake, Yet Officials are Deaf

Cambodia News, (Svay Rieng Province): Journalists from Kohsantepheap newspaper have been investigating allegations that truckloads of illegal goods are crossing the border every night between Vietnam and Cambodia through Kork Tek and Tuol Sdei corridors. The Kork Tek corridor is located in Kork Tek village, Chantrea district, while the Tuol Sdei corridor is in Daun village, Tuol Sdey commune, Chantrea district. Both gates are located in Svay Rieng province in Cambodia on the border with Vietnam.

Trucks are reportedly carrying wood illegally from Cambodia into Vietnam, while other trucks of consumer goods cross into Cambodia from Vietnam, without paying any official customs duty either way. According to the people living in Chantrea commune, it is not possible to know exactly what kind of goods are carried into Cambodia because the giant trucks are mostly closed, but they have an estimated capacity of 35 to 45 tons.


The trucks have been operating at night, but for the past four days they have been blocked by the Vietnamese side due to journalists hunting for photos of illegal cross-border traffic. Sources say that the truck companies have attempted to contact the Vietnamese authorities to bring goods across the border, but they have not responded.


Cambodian residents living in the border zone in Svay Rieng are appealing for action from the provincial governor. They say that the noise of the trucks every night is so loud that it disturbs their sleep, yet the local authorities hear nothing. They complain that the giant trucks are causing dust and fumes to enter their houses, which is affecting the health of the children who live along this road.

Residents also complain that the condition of the local roads is being ruined by the flow of heavy vehicles, and they suspect that the these same trucks are not paying any taxes to the state.
The citizens are therefore pleading for the immediate intervention of the Svay Rieng provincial authorities to restore order at the border crossings.
