Rubber sector nets $221.7M
Hin Pisei | Publication date 04 July 2021 | 20:30 ICT

Cambodia exported 132,174 tonnes of natural rubber worth $221.67 million in the first half of this year, up by 7.18 per cent and 38.12 per cent year-on-year in volume and value, according to Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Veng Sakhon.

The average selling price of rubber in the first half was $1,677 per tonne, up $374 or 28.72 per cent year-on-year, the minister said.

The going-rate for rubber from smallholder farmers is currently in the range of 5,850-6,500 riel ($1.44-$1.60) per kilogramme for 100 per cent dry rubber content (DRC 100%) latex, up by 209 riel month-on-month, and 2,500-3,300 riel for lump latex (DRC 50%), up by 169 riel on a monthly basis, he added.

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries director-general for Rubber Him Aun told The Post on July 4 that Covid-19 vaccination campaigns and gradual economic recoveries around the world have significantly boosted global demand for rubber since the end of last year.

He said this increase in demand is a “positive sign” that has pushed up rubber prices in Cambodia, which, he noted, are entirely dependent on international markets.

Cambodia’s rubber export up 3 pct in first 5 months of 2022
By Xinhua News Agency

Cambodia exported 105,048 tons of dry rubber in the first five months of 2022, up 3 percent compared to the same period last year, said a General Directorate of Rubber report on Friday.

The kingdom earned 168 million U.S. dollars in revenue from exports of the commodity during the January-May period this year, down 1.7 percent from 171 million dollars over the same period last year, the report said.

“A ton of dry rubber averagely cost 1,604 U.S. dollars within the first five months of 2022, about 71 dollars lower than that of the same period last year,” Him Oun, director general of the General Directorate of Rubber, said in the report.

The southeast Asian nation exports the commodity mainly to Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and China.

Cambodia has so far planted rubber trees on a total area of 404,044 hectares, in which the trees on 310,193 hectares, or 77 percent, are old enough to be tapped, according to the report.

Weak global demand punctures Jan-Nov rubber exports
May Kunmakara | Publication date 20 December 2022 | 21:32 ICT

Cambodia netted more than $453 million from the export of rubber latex and wood in the first 11 months of 2022, marking a slight year-on-year dip that has been blamed on diminished global demand and production chain disruption across the world tied to the Covid-19 crisis.

These figures were revealed in a report from the General Directorate of Rubber (GDR), under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, obtained by The Post on December 20.

In the January-November period, Cambodia produced 317,282 tonnes of rubber latex, up 173 per cent or 0.05 per cent year-on-year, of which 311,286 tonnes or 98.11 per cent were exported – 2,161 tonnes or 0.69 per cent fewer than in the year-ago period.

The Kingdom also produced rubber wood corresponding to 30,532 cubic metres, of which 24,989 cubic metres equivalent, or 81.8 per cent, was sold overseas.

The average selling price of latex for the 11-month period was to the tune of $1,444 per tonne, down $220 or 13.2 per cent from the same time last year, the report noted.
