Hip Replacement.

Post by Tootsfriend »

Asking for a friend who is not a member on this forum.

He had a hip replacement done many years ago in his home country and now at 70 years of age, on a pension, is now requiring his other hip to be done, either in Thailand or preferably in Cambodia as he has a EX wife here and a 6 yo son. He will be arriving in Cambodia at the end of this month. He says he had a friend who had one done at Chenda Polyclinic and he was very happy with the results.
My advice was to go to Thailand, but for convenience of aftercare and in case of problems here he would have a EX to look after him.

Anyone here ever had a hip replacement done here or any recommendations to hand on to him.

My mother-in-law broke the top of her femur in an accident last year, the recommendation was for a hip replacement to fix it. She's around 70. The general consensus among the people we talked to was that the Chinese-Cambodian Friendship Hospital was good at that kind of bone operation. The operation itself cost around $1,000, 10 days in a private room came in at $500, and that was for starters. I guess it cost us $5,000 in total, including the operation, the blood, medicine and all, spread out over the convalescence. It took her several months to get back on her feet, and now, a year later, she's walking OK, but still with a noticeable limp. We had her x-rayed recently, and everything inside looks like it's supposed to. The decision as to where to take her had to be made in a matter of hours, if we'd had more time we might have chosen somewhere else, but as things have turned out, we have no regrets. Communication with the doctors was good, both before and after the operation.
Revolutions have all shown that many things can be changed, with the exception of people themselves.

Several months to get back on her feet?

Most hip replacement ops get the patients on their feet the same, or the next day

I would say that wasn't the best hip surgery ever

She shouldn't have been "off her feet" at all

Anyhow, next time I need hip surgery I'm traveling to Vietnam to FV Hospital. Excellent care, excellent price and savagely pretty nursing staff

As I wrote, the operation was required after an accident and a complex fracture. I am no expert, but I think that the length of the convalescence was connected with this.

My good friend who owns a hotel here just went back to France for a hip replacement surgery. She has family there too, so I think she will be gone for a few months in total. I'd prefer to be in my home country if I had to recover from a major surgery like that.

When considering having major surgery in these parts of the world, the first thing to asses about a hospital is its intensive care unit and the specialist staff that work exclusively in it. Things go wrong and when they do it is always time critical.

No ICU - No thank you.

This case was about emergency surgery, so the choices are limited and it seems the woman survived albeit with a pronounced limp, so maybe that could be put it in the 'win' column. In the case of elective surgery, if you ended up with such a limp, you would have to notch it up as a loss.

Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere in this country for elective surgery when Bangkok and Singapore so close.

A friend just had a total hip replacement in Bangkok (Bangkok Hospital). It was the anterior computer assisted type which is less invasive and not done in Cambodia. The package price all in with 5 days in private hospital room, nursing care, meals, medicine etc was around USD 15.5k. Evidently he had a follow up appointment with Royal Phnom Penh which is affiliated with Bangkok Hospital. Hope this helps.
