SlowJoe wrote: Fri Feb 11, 2022 8:23 am Yeah fine, I fucked up. It's taken me almost a year to get my passport (still nothing) and my visa was only good for a year so...what do you do, right?

Yeah there's an "embassy" here (it's really a dinky little office space), but they were unable to handle my renewal (slightly more complex than a basic renewal), so everything had to be handled via Nova Scotia. I think I imagine an embassy being like the US embassy where things can, you know, actually get done. Not a glorified mail handler.

Whatever, it is what it is. Gotta deal with it.

When I was there a few years ago and had my passport stolen the Australian embassy handled everything. They sent my documents to Bangkok. There were a couple of screw ups like after a week they tell me I smiled on the passport photo, then the photo shop couldn't get the proper dimensions of the photo the second time which they are very particular about (1/3 space above your head 1/3 face and 1/3 space below) so it was sent back again. And this is when I only had 2 weeks left on my vacation and was in Siem Reap so had to beat it back to PP. Then I accidentally dove into the pool with my phone in my pocket so was terrified that my email access would be fucked. Luckily the phone restarted after drying it out.

The day before I was due to fly out and had contacted my insurance company and was bidding the wife a tearful farewell the single use travel document came through. When I got near the Australian embassy there was a huge police blockade for that street because of the water festival or whatever and the wouldn't let me thru even though the embassy was literally 100 M away. I said fuck it and jumped the barriers and ran to the embassy with the cops and soldiers yelling at me and pounded on the windows at the embassy.

To boot someone had found my discarded passport and turned it in to the embassy but by then it had been cancelled but at least the visa was in it still.

At the airport they tried to charge me $100 even though the embassy assured me that it was all fine. I basically told them to fuck themselves and refused threatening to call the embassy so they let me through.

Fun 4 week vacation.

If you have to go to immigration and you’re on an overstay be polite, grovel and act like a dumb expat (that’s what you are after all), even shed a tear or two.

Do not, repeat do not, raise your voice, roll your eyes or storm off or look angry. Look sad and desperate.
People of the world, spice up your life.

Thank you sir. I plan on retiring there in a few months and this is the first I heard about having to have an app. Just getting all my s*** together to make sure I know everything I need to do before I get there.

It is like a residency certificate. You will be registered at hotels etc by the operators.
When you settle- they will register you on this app when you have your first extension of stay.

Fines for landlords who fail to report foreigners’ presence
The General Department of Immigration has warned of imposing a fine on landlords and owners of all types of premises who fail to report long-staying foreigners, immigrants and tourists staying there to the police within 24 hours.

According to a GDI’s statement issued on Friday, the penalty will be made in accordance with the Guidelines on the Management of Foreigners in Cambodia.

The law on immigration said that owners or occupiers of all types of places of abode shall inform the competent authority within 24 hours, of the presence of any immigrant or non-immigrant aliens.

General Kirth Chantharith, GDI director-general, said that GDI established and ran a system to control the presence of foreigners in Cambodia called FPCS (Foreigner Present Control System) since June 2019.

Officials are working with capital and provincial authorities to urge all owners and occupants of all types of accomodation to make the report to the police.

He said that some homeowners and occupants report the presence of foreigners who stayed in their residences, but some failed to do so, especially owners of hotels and guesthouses.
He added that some rental houses and casino owners are also still not paying attention to the issue.

“I will order officers to inspect all locations or residences where foreigners reside and impose the strictest penalties in order to promote an effective implementation of the law on immigration to ensure security and the safety of foreigners during their stay in Cambodia,” Gen Chantharith said.

Phnom Penh City Hall gives deadline to hotel, apartment and condominium owners to enforce laws on foreigners in Cambodia
Phnom Penh Municipal Authority summoned about 400 hotel owners, apartment owners and condominium owners in Phnom Penh yesterday to a meeting to outline enforcement of laws on foreigners living in Phnom Penh

This outreach meeting was held on the afternoon of March 7, 2023 in the presence of Mr. Huot Hay, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh and Mr. Hun Surithy, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, representing Mr. Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh at Phnom Penh Capital Hall.

Mr. HUOT HAY stated that the summoning of the owners or occupants of hotels, apartments and condominiums in Phnom Penh to this meeting is intended by the Phnom Penh Municipal Authority to ensure that the owners of hotels, apartments and condominiums in Phnom Penh work together to combat all forms of human trafficking, prevent all forms of online gambling, and prevent money laundering.

Mr. Huot Hay also stated that as a first step, City Hall will only disseminate the law, with the Phnom Penh administration giving the owners or owners of hotels, apartments and condominium owners three months (April, May and June) before enforcement.

After 3 months, a team of law enforcement forces of both sexes, local authorities, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labor will inspect locations.
