Cambodia News (Svay Rieng): On the morning of 27 February 2023, a 32-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl went to a guesthouse room together in Svay Rieng province, and unexpectedly they committed suicide by pouring gasoline on themselves and setting themselves alight.
This tragic event occured in Ta Neng village, Sangke commune, Romduol district, Svay Rieng province. For the moment, there is not enough credible information available to indicate whether the two of them willingly decided to commit a suicide pact together, or whether the man decided to kill himself along with his much younger girlfriend.

However, it seems that there will be no further investigation into the circumstances of the deaths, and the two bodies have been examined and handed over to their families for a traditional ceremony.

Two lovers burned to death in a suicide pact, say cop
Two lovers were found burned to death in Svay Rieng province’s Romduol district on Monday in a guesthouse and police suspect that the man drugged the woman then set themselves alight.

Colonel Meas Thourk, Romduol District Police Chief, said yesterday the dead bodies were found at the 7777 guest house, at 7:40 am in Romduol district’s Sangke commune.

“The two victims were named as Vorn Nhanh, 32, working as a cook and An Chenda, 17, who worked at a casino. Both lived in Romduol district.

The police suspect the cause of death was a love dispute,” said Col Thourk.

Captain Srey Sam Ol, Sangke Commune Police Chief, said yesterday no one killed them.

“Vorn Nhanh drugged An Chenda first, which made her unconsciousness, then he doused her and himself with gasoline and set themselves on fire in a locked room,” Capt Sam Ol said.

“I think they had a serious problem related to their love life which was hard to deal with. Then Nhanh chose to commit suicide. At first, Chenda didn’t want to die, that is why Nhanh drugged her before setting themselves on fire,” Capt Sam Ol added.

As more details of this case come to light, the latest information says that the man, Ron Nhanh, aged 32, already had a wife, and that the couple have a 6 or 7-year-old child. The report says that the man's wife was upset by his affair with a 17-year-old casino worker, but she did not want to get a divorce.
The wife's refusal to divorce has been suggested as a possible (but unconfirmed) motive for the deaths of the two lovers.
