New Tourist Attraction - Cambodian Weddings

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Kammekor wrote:Yes. Indeed. The last wedding I attended was one of those over the top ones in a restaurant with about a hundred tables, so about a thousand attending. People I shared a table with managed to take two half cases of Ganzberg with them in a bag.
At smaller weddings I have never experienced this though. They also tend to record the visitors and their donation in a book at those weddings instead of setting up a heart shaped box for anonymous donations
Not to worry, cheap Charlie’s family has made sure to invite Missus to every wedding they’ve had ever since.

Everyone knows she’s out of the village, and thus will always pay her share.

Just like everyone in the village knows missus is a big softie in her heart and if they look pitiful in front of her long enough, she’ll give in and help.
Wouldn't she feel left out if they didn't invite her? After all she spent most of her life with those villagers.

Apparently once you receive an invitation you basically can't refuse to either attend or send a donation in lieu of attendance.
^this
You can drop the word 'apparently'. You either show up and pay, or pay in lieu.
I got invited to an engagement party (out in the sticks) by a girl I knew. Her fiance was a westerner that I knew by sight only. Apparently, these affairs are also big dress-up occasions. I was actually very surprised to receive it and I didn't really know how to react.

Having already experienced a wedding, I decided that honesty was the best policy, and I said I didn't really want to go - thanks, but no thanks. She never spoke to me again.

Now I know why... :D

Actually that probably would have been more interesting than one of the wedding parties. I would go to that if invited.
