Family Traveling to Cambodia - Help Needed
Family Traveling to Cambodia - Help Needed
Hello Ladies and Gents.
My niece and her partner are planning a couple of months in Cambodia roughly April time.
While they are there, they’d like to get involved in any eco/environmental works/NGO’s.
Would anyone have any recommendations as to who they could look at getting in touch with before they arrive please?
Gracious thanks in advance.

Do they have any experience or qualifications related to the kind of projects they want to get involved in? If not, then most "proper" NGO's would probably say thanks, but no thanks.
A well known Kiwi on here can confirm, but I think that strictly speaking even volunteer NGO/charity work isn't allowed on a T visa. Yes, we all know they are unlikely to be found out, but if it did come to light it might cause the NGO/charity some unwanted hassles.

Thanks for that. I can only speak for my niece who is a bio-chemist. She's visited Cambodia before and loved her time there, but would like to use her skills for something useful. If they can't volunteer without putting their visa at risk, then I shall advise them not to.

I’ve nothing really of importance to add, but a couple of thoughts.
With the duration of their visit being about a couple of months, would it not be worth them entering on Ordinary visas instead of Tourist visas? I vaguely recall that both can now be applied for online. The difference is $5 if obtained on entry. It would provide scope for extension in a proper manner.
Secondly, if they were to approach any suitable NGOs prior to arrival, then initial introductions would be completed, possibly any basic forms and documentation could also be completed, or pre-empted, such as criminal record DBS checks, etc.
One thing about the bureaucracy is that it is slow. My experience with countries where the bureaucracy is similar is that 2 months can be a mere blink of the eye in the processing. Which would be a shame to waste a 2 month holiday waiting for something that might happen, but took another week or two of wasted time. Time that could be put to much better use than loitering on riverside, for instance.

Cheers @Freightdog. I did mention to them about the ordinary visa and searching for and approaching NGOs from here in the soggy UK, but you know what (some) youngsters can be like! Their 2 month(ish) sojourn will be interspersed with trips to Vietnam, possibly Laos, and a bit of Thailand, so they are not going to be in country for two solid months. They won't be Riverside loiterers, that's not really their thing and I'd already warned them that's where @Doc67 hangs out

Sorry, I didn’t intend it to mean they’ll intend to spend their time loitering on riverside. More that if you think you’re expecting a call tomorrow, or maybe one more day, you simply may not venture very far. Which can easily turn into an entire week, by which time you start to look back and say
what if…?
