Laotian Drug Trafficker Appeals 25 Year Sentence

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): On the morning of February 15, 2023, a Laotian drug trafficker, Leng Sai, 34, appealed his sentence before the Phnom Penh Supreme Court, in connection with the trafficking of nearly 1 kg of drugs in Stung Treng province during the year 2015.

The Laotian national was found in possession of almost 1 kilogram of methamphetamine, and was arrested by police on August 17, 2015, in Rithy Sen Chey Village, Samaki Sangkat, Stung Treng City.

On June 21, 2016, Leng Sai was sentenced by the Stung Treng Provincial Court to 25 years in prison and fined 40 million Riels to be paid into the state budge, for illegal drug trafficking under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Control.

The defendant then appealed to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal, which upheld his sentence. He has now requested a sentence reduction before the Phnom Penh Supreme Court. The verdict will be pronounced on the morning of March 2, 2023.
