Despite everything, Vinci Airports is still ready to do business with Cambodia.

France to help expand Sihanoukville International Airport in early 2023
17 December 2022

Vinci Airports, a company that develops and operates major airports in Cambodia, has promised to assist Cambodia in upgrading the Sihanoukville International Airport in early 2023.

The promise was made during the meeting between Cambodia PM Samdech HE and President of Vinci Airports Nicolas Notebeart on 16 December. In the meeting, Mr Nicholas expressed sincere thanks to the government for always trusting Vinci from the 1990s to the present.

Meanwhile, PM HE congratulated Vinci Airports, which currently has more than 50 airport concession contracts in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Those airports can be used as a model for the large-scale expansion of Sihanoukville airport in early 2023.

UPDATE on this:

22/07/2021
Proposed new airports in Koh Kong, Battambang and Mondulkiri provinces have been postponed according to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
The SCCA spokesman Sin Chanserivutha confirmed plans to develop four Cambodian regional airports had been shelved in July 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation in the Kingdom.

Battambang Airport On Hold
An airport in Battambang funded by private investors is the fourth airport affected and plans are also now on hold.
The current inoperable airport is three kilometres from the Battambang city centre, with a total land area of 128.68 hectares. The runway length is around 1,600 metres with a width of 34 metres.

CEO News: Now that tourists are beginning to return to Cambodia in bigger numbers, some of the previous plans for developing infrastructure that were put on hold during the Covid travel restrictions, are being re-examined. One such plan was the extension and renovation of the Battambang Airport.

Battambang Airport Seeks Upgrade to International Level

Cambodia News(Battambang): The Battambang Provincial Government declared on 31 January 2023 that it has decided to renovate and upgrade the present 4C level airport, Veal Bek Chan Airport, as part of the Battambang province current revival as an independent cultural tourist destination.
Future Project:

According to the Governor of Battambang, Mr. Sok Lou Bam, the airport needs to be upgraded to the same size as the current airport in Siem Reap. This would allow the airport to receive direct international flights, which would encourage tourism and boost the region's economy.

The current Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation and the Battambang provincial administration are preparing meetings to discuss the work necessary for the airport renovation.

For the Phnom Penh to Battambang aviation demand, one of these will do. Up to 12 Seats, plenty of cargo and will land on what is already there. 150 miles as the Cessna flies, you'll be there in an hour.

In fact, one of these could service remote areas of the country that normally take many hours to get there by road. Actually, that's just about everywhere. There's an airport in Ratankiri, in Kron Ban Lung; 210 miles from PP airport. (How do you fancy getting home in 1 hour @Kammekor)

Even the Islands become accessible with a bit of judicious gardening (see the video below at 2:30 mins for the business end) PP to any of the islands in about an hour. Worth $100 of anyone's money.

I would love it.

In 2009 there was an NGO running a convenient service on Friday and Monday, perfect for a weekend of R&R. 75 minutes one way, stunning views. But, 125$ one way. 14 years ago. Current price would be 300$ return I guess. Pretty steep.

The "airport" in Ban Lung is just a dirt strip now.

It has always been just a dirt strip but it's in pretty rough condition now. It's been sold to Canadia Bank years ago. They have planned another borey there. A new airport is in the planning in Oh Choum district, about 20k out of Ban Lung. I wonder if it's economically viable.

I haven't seen any planes here for years, just an occasional helicopter.

Dirt strips are fine for a Caravan. Cows standing on it are another matter.

No, it was a single engine prop, not a turboprop, and a six seater if I recall well. It wasn't a Cessna for sure. And the pilot's name was Paul. When they cancelled the route he was transferred to Papua New Guinea (where he had to fly a turboprop).

Cambodia's new Ratanakkiri airport to serve as ‘travel hub’ for Northeastern region
Cambodia
Saturday, 08 Apr 2023
6:35 PM MYT

PHNOM PENH, April 8 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) confirmed that officials are undertaking a detailed study of area infrastructure before breaking ground on a new airport in Ratanakkiri, following the provincial administration’s notice that nearly 1,400ha of land in Lumphat district has been set aside as the potential site.

SSCA spokesman Sin Chanserivutha said on April 5 that the SSCA team needs to check the availability and capacity of the connecting infrastructure at the site such as roads, water supply and electricity.

“We have to check the geography and surroundings first and take into consideration things like the height of any nearby obstacles, safety zones, landing direction for incoming flights and the infrastructure that is available or will need to be in place, before we reach the point of starting the construction.

“Building an airport at this or another site won’t be a problem, it’s just that it must be done with a long-term vision in place and it can’t all be decided immediately,” he explained.

Governor Nhem Sam Oeun confirmed at an April 4 press conference on his provincial administration’s achievements of the past five years that nearly 1,400ha of land in Lumphat district has been designared for constructing a new airport.

He further indicated that the existing airport in Banlung town would be redeveloped into a multi-tenant entertainment complex and public park for the residents of the province.

“The old airport can no longer be expanded because it is in the centre of the town, so we have already studied the location of the new airport and will invite the SSCA for further inspection,” he said.

He noted that the new airport site is situated about 100km from the provincial town, Banlung, and is in a place that is convenient for transport not only within Ratanakkiri but also Stung Treng, Kratie and Mondulkiri provinces, making it a regional hub for travel.

The governor said he is hopeful that once the province has the new airport, it will help attract more investors there, thereby boosting the local economy and people’s livelihoods.

According to the provincial administration, the SSCA will transfer control of the old airport once it ceases operations so that it can be turned into a development that serves public interest, improves the attractiveness of the provincial town and increases the quality of life for local residents. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
