Long read; interesting take on Cambodia's mango production:

Mango exports boom in Cambodia, but farmers face challenges
Fresh mango exports are booming following approval from China, but water issues and market instability are biting
Danielle Keeton-Olsen, Roun Ry
December 13, 2021

It’s been three years since the forest was shorn from the hillside to make way for plantation. And yet Prum Ya only received permission this year to begin planting mango trees on 20 hectares of these foothills at the edge of Kirirom National Park, in Kampong Speu province, Cambodia.

Ya, 69, has spent the past 15 years tending mango trees in the southwest corner of Kampong Speu. A farmers’ collective – the Kirirom Keo Romiet Mango Agricultural Community – hires him to take care of 250 hectares of mango plantation in the region, which contain some 40,000 trees, he says. Planting new trees on areas of mountainside such as this latest 20-hectare plot is a strategic choice, as ponds and groundwater remain ample at the base of the mountains inside the protected area.

“Because this area is in the mountains, it attracts [more] rain than other places,” Ya says, though he has still observed changes in the pattern of rainfall here.

On 26 April, mango became the second fruit after banana to be approved by China for direct import from Cambodia, having met its phytosanitary standards. As a result, Cambodia’s fresh mango exports had risen 251% by the end of August, to nearly 164,000 tonnes. But that is still only a fraction of the 1.5 million tonnes of mango that the agriculture ministry estimates Cambodia can produce annually.

As Cambodia cultivates trade deals with China and South Korea, its mango farmers are struggling to process big orders. And as the industry grows, so do environmental issues surrounding it.

South Korea to Import 10,000 Tonnes of Mangoes
BY: Thun Senghong and Sam Sopich May 5, 2022 5:52 PM

PHNOM PENH–South Korea plans to import 10,000 tonnes of mangoes from Cambodia annually to meet local demand.

Cambodia and South Korea explored potential trade, mainly in Cambodian mangoes, when Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak met Gyuhwa Jang, vice president of the Korea Importers Association, and Yu Lin, president of Gadosh Korea, on May 3.

Jang told Sorasak that the association has about 15,000 member companies and is investing in all areas. Especially, it is studying the Cambodian market.

Yu Lin said she intended to import at least 10,000 tonnes of mangoes from Cambodia per year.

Korean Ambassador Chring Botum Rangsay has previously met Lin Yu to discuss supplying the Korean market with a standard and type of mango, and whether the supply is limited.

“If Cambodia can supply the amount of mangoes required by the company in accordance with Korean standards and norms, the company will start importing mangoes to Korea,” Lin Yu said.

The ambassador confirmed that there are many types of Cambodian mango that can be eaten both ripe and young, and the type Cambodia exports is turmeric because it has a sweet and sour taste and smell.

In the first three months of 2022, Cambodia exported 81,418 tonnes of fresh mangoes, down 20.73 percent from the same period in 2021. Of these, 40,849 tonnes were exported to Vietnam, 22,244 tonnes to China, 18,181 tonnes to Thailand and 142 tonnes to Korea.

Mango exports to South Korea were higher than the full year of 2021 when nearly 150 tonnes were exported.

Cambodia started exporting to South Korea in January 2020 after the two sides finalized an agreement on mango products in the previous October. The two sides spent four years from 2015 negotiating the agreement.

Hygiene requirements hit fresh mango export to South Korea
Stringent phytosanitary requirements have posed challenges for Cambodian fresh mangoes to gain access to the South Korean market after both sides reached a protocol of fresh mango export in 2015.

Hean Vanhan, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, said that despite the green light from the South Korean government for the export of Cambodian fresh mangoes, Cambodia has not yet achieved the goal due to technical problems in quality control.

“It has been almost ten years since Cambodia started negotiations for mango export to South Korea, but it didn’t materialize so far because of the lack of facilities such as hot water treatment (HWT) and vapour heat treatment (VHT) in the private sector,” he said at a workshop last week.

The export of fresh mangoes to South Korea stipulates that the mango plantations have facilities such as packaging, storage and phytosanitary requirements.

However, technical barriers and hygiene requirements are still significant obstacles for the Kingdom’s fresh mangoes to reach the South Korean market.

According to a report from the Agriculture Ministry, exports of fresh mangoes from Cambodia reached about 138,000 tons in the ten months this year, a 31 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

The Kingdom’s fresh mangoes are exported to Vietnam, Thailand, China and some EU countries.

Jan-Nov mango exports dip 30% to 170K tonnes
Hin Pisei | Publication date 09 January 2023 | 22:24 ICT

Cambodia exported 169,658 tonnes of fresh and dried mangoes in the first 11 months of 2022, down 30.28 per cent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Of this, fresh and dried mangoes respectively accounted for 152,994.68 tonnes and 16,663.5 tonnes, down 32.5 per cent and 0.68 per cent from the 226,577.71 tonnes and 16,777.82 tonnes recorded in the same time of 2021.

Buyers of fresh Cambodian mangoes for the period included Vietnam, Thailand, mainland China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Austria, the ministry reported, listing import markets for the dried fruit as: mainland China, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, Russia, Italy, the UK, South Korea, the US and Australia.

Although the export figures were not broken down by market, Hun Lak, CEO of Rich Farm Asia Co Ltd, a local agricultural investor that grows mangoes of the Keo Romiet variety in Kampong Speu province, sees the Covid-19 restrictions implemented by Beijing as the “biggest reason” for the sharp year-on-year plunge in overall exports of the fruit in fresh form.

Mango Prices Crash
Image
Cambodia News, Pailin Province: As of February 6, 2023, more than 200 mango trees in flower were chopped down in Teuk Phos village, Sangkat Pailin, Pailin City, Pailin Province. The owner has declared that he is abandoning mango production because the market price suddenly dropped from 2,000 riel per kilogram to 400 to 500 riel per kilogram.

According to him, mangoes have become a worthless crop, and he has cut down his trees so that he can use the land to grow cashews or cassava, which have higher market prices at the moment. He said that he needs the money immediately to pay off his debts.

Thanks, yeah, I'd like to know more about those facilities. I think it was a few years ago that they first ones were being set up.
