Re: It's Official: Koh Rong International Airport Project Signed and Sealed
Koh Rong International Eco-Tourism Airport
In early 2023, the news of Koh Rong International Eco-Tourism Airport was announced after a decade of rumours, and the USD $300 million development is led by Royal Group Koh Rong Development Company, under a similar agreement to the Dara Sakor International Airport construction project.
The development of the Koh Rong International Eco-Tourism Airport is expected to take five years* and forms part of the Cambodian government’s framework of a multi-purpose joint venture for the whole of Koh Rong city. The development will be in the form of a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain (DBFOM) project within the framework of Build-Own-Operate (BOO).
Initial plans are for the airport to be a 4C-class international airport, so the airport’s runway is longer than 1,800m and it will be designed for aircraft with a wingspan of up to but not including 36m.
The total area of the terminal is 4000 sqm in the first phase and 7000 sqm in Phase II, with the departure and arrival terminals to be constructed separately.
The master plan includes projected passenger growth of 275,314 passengers per year in Phase 1 (which is a ten-year phase), 265,929 passengers in Phase II, and a limit of 531,858 passengers throughput per year after the completion of its final development.
Expected Cost: USD $300 million
Size: 600 hectares
Due Date: 2028*

Maybe it's not for us hoi polloi, judging by the promo pictures...Freightdog wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 2:37 pm Regards the airport- they seem to have built in some obsolescence and scope for further development, by utilising a design and layout that was out of date last century.
Or there’s a numpty or two among the advisors.

Right, it's for eco tourists flying in with their private jets. When can we expect Greta?Doc67 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 8:17 amMaybe it's not for us hoi polloi, judging by the promo pictures...Freightdog wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 2:37 pm Regards the airport- they seem to have built in some obsolescence and scope for further development, by utilising a design and layout that was out of date last century.

Tommie is right. This is a white elephant.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 2:09 pmBecause they get to strip out luxury hardwoods all over the island and legally sell them for megabucks on the pretext of clearing the airport siteTommie wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 1:49 pm Why would someone build a international airport only 40 kilometers away from another international airport in Sihanoukville? It is not like the airport in sihanoukville is to crowded nowadays, and unlikely to be so in the next decade. And it is no great expedition voyage to get to the island from Sihanoukville. 3 cold beers and You are there.
Probably KRS too while they are at it
To Jerry, I walked around Koh Rong from the tourist port Koh Touch village to Sok San village a few years ago. Then across the island to the opposite shore on the northern reach, to Prek Svay village. In the proposed airport area, there is nothing but scrub, mostly cleared off long ago.
There won't be much nature left once (and if) they build concrete roads everywhere over all the beaches...
