If Cambodia didn't get set back in the 70s it would be called Kun Khmer around the world, maybe even Muay Khmer.
I have heard some far-fetched theories blaming everything on the Khmer Rouge, but this one absolutely tops it.

Ah, I forgot the Khmer rouge was the only thing to happen in the 70s! Not the authoritative state under lon nol! Maybe read up on some history, or possibly go back to your home country since you're so ignorant of a country that allows you to be a guest.

About 3,600 soldiers will perform a traditional Muay Thai "wai kru", setting a new world record for a mass performance of the pre-fight dance of respect for a boxer's coach, in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Cambodia Suggests Neighbours to Jointly Register Martial Arts on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage
AKP Phnom Penh, March 02, 2023 --

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has recommended the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to work with its neingbouring counterparts for a joint registration of their martial arts on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

The Cambodian Premier made the recommendation following the ongoing controversial conflict over the original ownership of Kun Khmer, Cambodian traditional martial art, or Muay Thai in Thailand.

“No need to get into conflict over the ownership,” said Samdech Techo HE, adding that when Cambodia hosts a competition, the sport is called Kun Khmer, likewise it is called Muay Thai or Muay Lao when there is a match in Thailand or Laos, respectively.

The Cambodian Prime Minister said he had raised the issue with his Thai and Lao counterparts during their recent meetings.

Recently, Thailand has decided to boycott the Kum Khmer events in the upcoming SEA Games in Cambodia on ground when the latter has dropped Muay Thai to use its own version of Kun Khmer.

The same case is for Sankranta (New Year celebration), he stressed, explaining that Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand can apply for a joint registration at UNESCO even though they celebrate it separately.

Brazillian boxer banned by WMO after supporting Cambodian kickboxing

Image
Following an argument over the origin of kickboxing between Thailand and Cambodia, the World Muaythai Organisation (WMO) has banned Brazilian boxer Thiago Teixeira from the sport after he announced support for Kun Khmer. His Apex Fight Series middleweight class championship record was also expunged.

The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) has since announced that any country participating in Kun Khmer would be banned from joining major events such as the World Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Martial Arts Games, and World Boxing Championship.

The controversy further escalated when Cambodia appointed Brazilian boxer Thiago Teixeira, as the ambassador for Kun Khmer. The 30 year old Teixeira, who previously trained in Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand, and boasts a tattoo of the words “Muay Thai” on his back, changed his Facebook name to Thiago Teixeira Kun Khmer and announced his love of the Cambodian version of the sport.

Thiago Teixeira Kun Khmer

Image
Cambodia News (Thailand): Muay Thai fans have strongly criticized the Brazilian for supporting Khmer martial arts while large Muay Thai words were tattooed on his back. Fans have asked him to remove the tattoo. In addition, Thais say that Thiago Teciara also used to train in Muay Thai in Thailand and used to take photos with Bu Khao, but said that "Muay Thai" originated from "Khmer Martial Arts".

It should be noted that this Brazilian boxer with a loving heart for Cambodia has announced that he will be representing Cambodia and promote Khmer martial arts on the international stage. Recently, Thiago Teciara, 30, had the opportunity to travel abroad, winning and waving the Cambodian flag on the international stage.

It's all so ridiculous. Can't the mighty Chinese step in and tell Thailand and Cambodia that it's "Chinese Kickboxing" from now on, or else?

Reminds me of the time England refused participate in the 1994 world cup as USA insisted on calling it soccer.

Pretty sure that's what happened, it was a while ago now
