Cute 'Fishing Cat' Kitten Handed Over to Conservation Team

NOTE: This 'cute kitten' is a wild animal; it is illegal, and cruel to the animal to keep it as a pet.

Cambodia News (Takeo Province): On the morning of December 21, 2022, a lost fishing cat, which was 'found' as a kitten by a good samaritan, was handed over to the wildlife conservation team to properly rescue and raise at Phnom Tamao Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Area.

According to Mr. Neth Pheaktra, the representative of the Ministry of Environment, the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List, and the number of fishing cat living is declining drastically and moving to extinction in SE Asia.
He showed gratitude to the person who volunteered to turn in the captured wild animal to the specialists, and he urged the public not to keep wild animals as pets, and to denounce wildlife trafficking and consumption in any form.

A Fishing Cat and Her Kitten Spotted
AKP Phnom Penh, January 23, 2023 --

A group of conservationists from the Cambodian Fishing Cat Project has confirmed their discovery of a fishing cat mother and her kitten for the first time since 2017.

“We have been monitoring fishing cats in Cambodia for more than 5 years, precisely since 2017. This year, we obtained footage of a fishing cat mother and her kitten for the first time in Cambodia,” the group shared the discovery on social media.

“We are really excited and happy for this great news,” they added.

Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) reproduction cycle goes like this: babies are being born after gestation 60 to 70 days. Normally, there are one to four babies only. At birth, the kitten weight 150g each. Fishing cat kittens learn to fish by watching their mother. And at 10 months of age, a young fishing cat is ready to be out to venture on their own.

Not a cat person, definitely a beautiful cat though. Props to whoever turned it in and didn't decide on selling it. Not saying the government should reward the good Samaritan (paid trip to pp and visiting the zoo) but they should. It would probably be at the cost of an increase in trapping the wild animals though..
