Cambodia News (Battambang Province): On August 24, 2022, at 3:40 pm, two small children, who were supposedly being looked after by their grandparents, are reported to have died by accidental drowning in a swamp in Tani village, Battambang province.

According to the 57-year-old grandfather, Och Siev, at 2:30 pm he was herding the cows at the rice paddy when his 41-year-old wife, Eur Chhun, called asking about their missing grandchildren. The couple went searching, and tragically they found their two grandchildren, a 5-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, drowned in a swampy pond only 10 meters away from their backyard.

The two children, who were cousins were taken to the hospital by the grandparents, but it was too late.
Their bodies were examined by the police before being given to the family for the funeral.

In recent months, there have been several similar cases of children being left unattended, and tragically drowning when all that was needed was a few seconds of awareness about where they are playing and what they’re doing. Sadly it seems to fit in with the laissez-faire approach to safety in Cambodia.

Two More Toddlers Die in Accidental Drownings

Cambodia News(Banteay Meanchey) : On 31 August 2022, two 3-year-olds died from drowning in two separate incidents. One case happened in Thmar Puok District and the other occurred in Poipet.

According to the Thmar Puok District Police at 1:29 pm, a 3-year-old boy named Houk Teat from Kbal Krabei Village, fell into a canal 200 meters west of Banteay Chhmar commune, Thmar Puok district, and drowned.

Police confirmed that the victim and another boy in the same village rode a bicycle to visit the canal, then one of the boys fell into the canal and was shouting for help, but the child who went with him did not dare to help, so he rode his bicycle back to call for help from the parents of the victim. Unfortunately when they arrived, the victim was found dead.

Separately, in Poipet City, the city police said that at 5:20 pm on 31 August 2022, a 3-year-old girl named Sok Phany fell into the sewer during a heavy rain and went missing.

According to police, Kim Kim, the victim's 70-year-old grandmother, said that after she had fed her two grandchildren, she told them not to go anywhere while she went to the laundry for a while. When she came back, she did not see the two children, until she heard was a rumor from the neighbors that her granddaughter had fallen into the ditch.
Upon hearing the news, the authorities, searched and dragged the ditch to find the body, but did not find it until 5:20 a.m. on September 1, 2022.
The little girl was living with her grandmother Kim Kim in Samaki Meanchey Village, Sangkat O'Chrov, Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province.

Cambodian and Thai Authorities Search for Missing Toddler

Cambodia News (Banteay Meanchey): On the afternoon of 4 September 2022, a 4-year-old boy disappeared while by a border stream between Poipet City and Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province in Thailand. Poipet City Authorities led the relevant specialized authorities in cooperation with the Aranyaprathet District Authority’s team in the search for the boy.
The missing boy is a 4-year-old boy named Lay Mengseur. His father is Loeun Lay and his mother is Chen Savun. They lived in O'Chrov commune where the incident occurred.

Land Border Police No. 891 in the area said that the missing child and his brother were playing by the border stream with some other children. The child’s brother, Hoak Teuk Leang, was busy climbing trees and left his younger brother to play at the mouth of the stream. When the brother returned, the younger child could not be found, and so he ran home to tell his parents.

Poipet City Mayor, Keat Hul and Aranyaprathet district authorities led the search with a rescue team of 17 people, past 9 pm on the same day, but still could not find the boy. The rescue team of Aranyaprathet district authorities promised to return to continue their search with the authorities of Poipet City for the missing child on the morning of 5 September 2022.
Border police explained that it is difficult to find the missing child because the water current of the border stream is currently at high tide with strong current.

Besides this missing child, only a week before, there was another case of a girl who drowned in O Chhrov Commune stream when she was swept into the water on the evening of 31 August 2022 in O'Chrov commune, and her body was only found on the morning of 1 September 2022.
Both cases were caused by the negligence of the children's adult guardians.

Cambodia News (Battambang Province): On January 18, 2023, at 7:30 am in Sophy village, Battambang province, the negligence of a couple of parents led to the tragic, but wholly preventable, demise of their 2-year-old girl who drowned in a pond while playing unsupervised.
The parents said that they were busy and had left the daughter playing alone near their house. When they noticed that she was missing, it was too late, because she had fallen into the pond and drowned.
