Businesswoman pleads to be released on bail
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday heard the bail release plea of a real estate businesswoman, accused of allegedly issuing dud cheques to settle more than $3 million in debts to five of her clients.

Deputy Prosecutor Lim Bunheng named the accused as Pichr Sreymom, 35, an entrepreneur and the owner of real estate company “Sreymom”, living in Chbar Ampov district’s Nirot commune.

He said​Sreymom was charged with five counts of “issuing dud cheques” under Article 231 of the Law on Negotiable Instrument and Payment Transactions.

If convicted, she faces a jail term of one to three years in each case.

Bunheng said that Sreymom was arrested on November 17 in accordance with a warrant issued by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

He noted that, in 2020, Sreymom borrowed the money from the plantiffs, ranging from $700,000 to $1 million each and collected more than $3 million, for her real estate company to construct apartments and buy online lotion products to sell.

He added that between April and June this year, Sreymom issued five cheques worth more than $3 million to the plaintiffs in order to settle her debts.

“But when the plaintiffs tried to cash the cheques from her bank they discovered, she had no money,” he said.

SENTENCE: The result is out! Pich Srey Mom was sentenced to 2 years in prison

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: A court has sentenced a "hi-so" businesswoman, Pich Srey Mom, to two years in prison for "failing to comply with a commodity that can be traded". This verdict was announced by the Judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Mr. Rath Sitha on December 29, 2022.

Prosecution spokesman Plang Sophal told reporters that prosecutors had decided to charge Pich Srey Mom, a businesswoman, with "non-compliance with traded instruments" for writing false checks, and she has been sentenced to serve time in prison according to a detention order issued by a judge. It should be noted that this well-known woman, Pich Srey Mom, was arrested by the Phnom Penh Military Police on the morning of November 17, 2022 in connection with the fraud of several victims, who lost millions of dollars.[sic]*

*The precise amount of money is unconfirmed, but multiple news items report that Pich Sreymom has issued several worthless checks worth 100s of thousands of US dollars, including one that was issued to a business partner for $770,000.
