3rd National Short Film Festival of Cambodia

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): 35 short films will compete in the next week's 3rd National Short Film Festival of Cambodia, which will take place from 16 to 17 December, screened in eight cinemas located across Phnom Penh.

Pok Borak, director of the Department of Film and Cultural Promotion, said at a press conference on Monday morning at the Legend Olympia Theater, that the festival committee has received 35 short films, 4 of which were the work of the trainees who participated in the short film production training organized by the Department of Film Arts and Cultural Promotion.

He said that the 35 short films submitted to the competition will be screened in eight cinemas in the capital, allowing the audience to choose and evaluate their favorite works. In addition to screening 35 competing short movies, the festival will also screen 33 short documentaries that showcase the traditional life, culture, as well as the living environment along Cambodia's Mekong River. These short films are produced by participants in a documentary filmmaking course organized by the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in recent years.

Mr. Ek Buntha, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Cultural Technology of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said that the 3rd National Short Film Festival of Cambodia, which is scheduled to be held next week, is an important and necessary event to encourage young Cambodian people to express their ideas, and to share them through cinema.

In this National Short Film Festival, there are 3 big prizes - Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards - and then there are 5 other awards, including a prize for Best Young Director.

Workshop on Cambodian film industry attracts youth

A workshop held as part of the National Short Film Festival has attracted many aspiring young filmmakers in the country.

Held under the theme “Short Films as a Stepping Stone to Feature Films” at Chaktomuk Theatre Hall, Phnom Penh, the workshop was aimed at helping young filmmakers to gain experience and strengthen their capacity to contribute to the growth of the Cambodian film industry, Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, has said.

Ly Polen, a young producer and director, who attended the workshop said that finding budget is the big issue for young filmmaker, but it can be solved by crowd funding, finding an investor, or soliciting fund from film associations abroad.
