Pig news
Re: Pig news
What has caused this collapse in prices? There are no imports allowed since a year ago, so what has happened?
Re: Pig news
When prices go up, people see opportunities I guess.
Here in the province pepper prices went through the roof about eight years ago because there hardly was any supply, so a lot of farmers invested in pepper farms. Now local supply is so large it's hardly worth to pick the peppers because the prices have dropped with more than 80%.
Re: Pig news
Ok, just supply and demand. I don't suppose there are many bureaucratic barriers to entry here for pig farming; buy a few pigs, fatten them up and then take them for a fun day out.Kammekor wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 9:20 amWhen prices go up, people see opportunities I guess.

That's how it's done here..... Buy a few piglets, hope they don't die early and feed 'm all the leftovers. Then one day the motodup comes to get 'm and the next days they're for sale at the market.Doc67 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 9:28 amOk, just supply and demand. Now few make the effort though.

Swill feeding is the traditional name for the feeding of food scraps to pigs. This practice has caused foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks overseas,

Cambodian Pig Smuggling Ring Intercepted in Thailand
Driver Caught in Thailand Smuggling Pig Carcasses from Cambodia
By Jennifer Shike December 5, 2022
Livestock and customs officials in Thailand seized about 1.5 metric tons of pork carcasses on Dec. 4. The pork was had been smuggled into Thailand’s eastern border province of Sa Kaeo from Cambodia, reports Thai PBS World.
The driver of the pickup truck transporting the pork was arrested after a brief chase, the article said. The driver allegedly admitted the carcasses were being delivered to a customer.
Thai businessmen will place an order for pig carcasses with their Cambodian counterparts, a livestock official told Thai PBS World. Then, they will arrange for the meat to be sent to a "rendezvous" somewhere near the Thai border, opposite Sa Kaew Province.
After the contraband is smuggled across the natural border, the article said a pickup truck is waiting to drive the meat to the buyers. To prevent being caught or attracting attention from police and security forces, the carcasses are typically covered with gunny bags.
In October, two shipments of smuggled pork were intercepted, with one of the shipments weighing about five metric tons.
The Thai Livestock Development Department said it is tightening controls on pork being smuggled into the country to prevent the possible spread of the highly infectious virus, African swine fever (ASF). Although ASF presents no food safety or health risk to humans, it is highly transmissible and deadly in both domestic and wild pigs.

Re: Pig news
Cambodia News: In the beginning of 2023, the price of pigs has risen a bit, but it is not yet enough to allow the farmers to make a profit. However, this news provides some hope of future profits for Cambodia's pig farmers.

1,760 Kilograms of Illegal Pork Destroyed by Authorities
Cambodia News(Phnom Penh): On the afternoon of February 17, 2023, officers of the General Directorate of Consumer Protection, Competition and Counterfeiting and officials from the Department of Animal Health, destroyed 1,760 kilograms of pork carcasses and pork organs, which were confiscated recently under health and safety regulations.
Please note that last month a Letter 438 was issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance dated January 24, 2023, requesting that the above departments increase the number of inspections of the means of transporting fresh and frozen meat, especially pig products, due to the risk of the propogation of the African Swine Fever (ASFV)and other infectious diseases nationally and internationally.
Authorities issued an order to the officers concerned to increase the hygiene controls of transported meat and pork products, checking the levels of bacteria, and for the presence of illegal chemicals. Non-compliance with health regulations results in the automatic confiscation and destruction of the entire cargo of meat.
