Couple Scam Monk with Donation of Fake $50 Note
Cambodia News, Kandal province: Some people are not scared to mock religion or to scam the naive. (Karma will bite you.)
There is a warning out in the pagodas of Kandal province, following the latest scam on a naive monk living in Wat Phum Thmey, Ang Snuol District, Kandal Province, involving counterfeit US $50 notes.
The victim monk, Muon Sambo, explained the scam in detail: That at around 2 pm, a couple in their 40s, came to the wat to ask for some water, and when they saw that a school was being built there, the man said that he would like to donate some money toward the construction costs. He said that however, unfortunately, the couple had only just been to the bank to withdraw money and so they only had large dollar bills of US$50.
He offered to donate $20 for the building, but he only had a $50 note. The monk therefore gave US$20 in change, with the rest in Khmer riel.
The victim monk also revealed that the trick to hide the fact that the money was counterfeit was that the scammers used a colored tape similar to real money and stuck it over the stamp marked "Luy Sen Copy" [COPY] .
The poor monk was made to feel very foolish when he proudly handed over the $50 note to the head teacher, who immediately realized that it was fake money.
