12 Detained in Village Cockfight Clampdown
November 28, 2022 14:55
Cambodia News, (Battambang Province): On November 27, 2022 at Otanob village in Kdol Daun Teav commune, Battambang city, at least 12 people were detained by the police force of the Provincial Criminal Commission, while the dozens of other people scattered and ran away when the police arrived during the village cockfights.
According to the police report, Mr. Chhoeung Kimsong learnt that the local village men recently reopened a cockfighting ring at the back of the village. The villagers confirmed that around O'tanob village, there used to be weekly cockfights, but after the Royal Government announced the closure of illegal gambling completely, the cockfighting group was quiet for a while.
But then, quietly this time, the village men made an appointment to reopen the ring for gambling, however, the authorities heard about it, and on November 27, when these players are gathering in the ring, police forces besieged the village and cracked down. However, the report confirmed that only 12 players were arrested, and there were at least 40 others who ran around the village in surprise when police arrived.
Mr. Chhoeung Kimsong said that the group of gambling addicts had made an appointment to reopen the occasional cockfighting ring in the village, which is against the law, and it has now been closed. Twelve arrests were made. He added that officials are now questioning the suspects to build a case to be sent to the provincial court.
