A 12 or 14 year old, even 16 getting married today seems ridiculous but I suppose when those laws were written times were different. Kids would go to work in the local coal mine to support the family, or take over the family farm and raise their siblings when their parents died of smallpox. They no doubt grew up a lot faster back then.
