The Ministry of Culture Examined Claims of a Hermit That Angkor Wat Was Built in India

Phnom Penh: The Director of Heritage at the Ministry of Culture His Excellency Prak Sovannara informed that (he) has examined the claims made by an Indian hermit who claimed that Angkor Wat was originally built in India and then transported by machine; (this examination) is being undertaken so as to stop the spreading of confusion in national and international citizens. His excellency is taking these steps after an Indian hermit said that many temples were not really built in the territory of Cambodia, they were built and carved in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the south of India, where the stones where assembled and marked with serial numbers then dismantled and transported by ship to Cambodia.
The holy man further stated that when the stones arrived in Cambodia they were reassembled and re-carved once again, there were even elephants used to pull the stones from India.
The Director of Heritage rejected these claims in their entirety, (saying they) don't have the skill and there is no evidence: he's just saying silly things in order to claim fame and benefit. Furthermore, His Excellency strongly emphasised that "Khmers built (Angkor Wat) themselves from the resourcelessness and inventiveness of pure Khmers". His Excellency explained that the only influence Cambodia received was in respect to religion. As for Angkor Wat or other temples they were not influenced in any way similar to that described by this man. Amongst all of the temples in Cambodia there is only one Temple of a great hermit in Takeo province that resembles temples in the south of India.
His Excellency Prak Sovannara said that their is clear strong evidence that the temples were built in Cambodia without outside intervention, constructions sites like Phnom Kulen, the Temples of Preah Vihear and Banteay Chhmar for example.

The Indian hermit, called Nonada, who claims to be an enlightened man, is often in the national (Indian) news and (recently) broadcast in international news. In August last year, the Supreme Court of India ruled that he had to undergo a sexual test after he denied allegations of sexual abuse and rape on the basis that he is impotent.

*Disclaimer, this news article is a grade or 3 above my level of Khmer and there will inevitably be many mistakes and errors (I can spot some now reading the preview) I translated it as the subject interested me and I believe that you learn best when being challenged and making mistakes. Thought I'd post it anyway as it took me over an hour. %)

Here's the Cambodia Heralds translation:

Cambodia denies Angkor Wat first built in India

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- General Department of Heritage of Ministry of Culture and Fine Art denied Saturday that Cambodia's world heritage site Angkor Wat was first built in India.

The denial was made in respond to Indian hermit claiming that many Cambodian temples including Angkor Wat were not built in Cambodia.

"What the Indian hermit said was not true and groundless because we had a lot of evidence clarifying about the construction sites and where we took stones to build the temples, so why had we to bring stones from India," said Prak Sovannara, director general of the General Department of heritage.

"What that hermit said was incorrect," he said. "The world knows it after Angkor Wat was inscribed as World Heritage site."

"No one said the materials used to build the temples were brought from India" he said.

He said Cambodia is really influenced by religions from India, but Angkor Wat and other temples were completely built by Cambodians.
