whats to debate? they are doing it, they have been since the start and now they crave the colour of law?

when i did my cisco cert in 2000, 4 of 7 students were feds.

they openly discussed their gear in telco's premises.

When properly executed, privacy is guarded by mathematics, not human beings. And the fact is that we have cryptographic suites that the feds have failed to break. Those who have privacy are those who have adapted.

Hmmm........I'm an old pessimist when it comes to internet security......but how to adapt, BOFH ? Willing to share ? VPNs are not safe (I always had the feeling that many exit nodes are run by certain agencies), tunnels are not safe......so what is ?
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

i actually prefer to be an open book to the "authorities".
makes life easier if they know i am no threat.

but that is a matter of personal cynicism.

don't stop me one little bit.

any wrong i do is like crossing the street against the lights.

i understand people's concern though.

VPNs are not safe depending on who your adversary is. Tunnels are not homogenous. There are many tunnels that work and even more that don't.

What we know, based on Der Spiegel's latest NSA documents that were published on December 17 by Jacob Appelbaum and Laura Poitras, is that Tor, PGP and OTR works. But the fact remains: If the NSA is your adversary then you have most likely already lost.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized" (Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution)

There is an interesting Q & A after this article, how to secretly leak to "The Intercept".

Basically: new clean laptop, Tails OS, remote location(ie coffee shop Wi-Fi), Tor, single use.[edit to add, leave your cell phone at home and have home computer busy DL some torrent.] Every browser/hardware has fingerprints, it's tough to be anonymous.

I tried the EFF test to see if my system/browser would blend into the crowd. Result was that it had identified 25 ways that my browser was unique. So much for blending in.

"“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,”"( GW) Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”
we live in pragmatic times.
they have been doing it for years.
now, they want to make it admissible as evidence.
