30 Years Prison and Two Not Guilty Verdicts in Drug Case

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The Trial Chamber Judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on the morning of October 12, 2022, sentenced three men and a women to 30 years in prison and fined them 60 million riels on charges of drug trafficking nearly 3 kg in Sangkat Prek Leap, Khan Chroy Changva, Phnom Penh in October 2021.

The Council of Judges also dropped the charges against two of the detainees, and decided to release them from prison because they were not guilty of the charges: Defendants Tong Tharith, 42, a Cambodian man, and Chan Phearum, a 27-year-old Cambodian man, were acquitted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Ms. Yin Chheanavy, President of the Trial Chamber, stated in the verdict that the four convicted are: 1. Meng Sopheaktra, alias French, male, 42 years old, Cambodian. , 2. John Sok Chan, male, 26 years old, Khmer, 3. Te Ly Pheng Ang, male, 25 years old, Khmer, and 4. Nguon Balinka, female, 39 years old, Khmer.

The four were sentenced to 30 years in prison each and fined 60 million riel each for storing, transporting and trafficking nearly 3 kgs of methamphetamine.

All six were arrested on October 19, 2021.
