Lightning Strikes a Palm Tree Breaking Power Line; Woman Shocked but ALIVE

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Lightning Strikes a Palm Tree Breaking Power Line; Woman Shocked but ALIVE

She's Alive!

Cambodia News (Kampong Chhnang): On Monday night, 3 October 2022, in Chumpear village, Prey Kry commune, Choul Kiri district, Kampong Chhnang province, there was a giant thunderstorm at 7:40 pm.
In an incredible sequence of events set off by a bolt of lightning, a palm tree was struck by lightning, causing it to fall over and break a power line, which in turn fell on or near a 34 year old woman named Lang Sokhea, giving her an enormous shock.
The electric shock caused the woman to pass out for a while, but she was buried in some sand and mud, (a debatable, but common Cambodian method for treating electric shock victims)while waiting for help. She was then taken to the local health center, where she is expected to recover.

I’ve asked a few times, and nobody (khmer) has ever managed to give an explanation as to why this is done. Ultimately, this is done because it has always been done this way.

Throwing sand on fire? Who knows?
It’s amazingly difficult to change bizarre ideas if nobody knows why they do a particular thing to begin with..

Replying to Freightdog, a scientific response is required, perhaps they believe any "residual" electrical current will be grounded by doing this????

It would be just as useful to plug her into your mobile phone for a free battery re-charge.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

"Man with Tesla runs over woman struck by lighting to get quick recharge"

I can see it now! :D

This man was not so lucky:

Roadworker Struck by Lightning

Cambodia News (Kandal Province): At 5:00 pm on October 3, 2022, in Sdao Kanleng 5 village, Kandal province, Sem Sokchea, a 42-year-old male construction worker was struck and killed by lightning while working on a road.

According to the victim's son, they were heading back to the work site after finishing their work, when suddenly, it started raining with thunder and lightning. Then his father was struck by a bolt of lightning, causing both men to black out. Moments later, the son became conscious and saw his father still lying motionless on the road. He called for help from his colleagues.
The father was still alive, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the Kien Svay District Health Center. The autopsy confirmed that he was killed by the lightning strike and his body was given to the family for funeral rites.
