This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Poipet

Post by Funflyer »

I've been through Poipet on the way from Bangkok to Phnom Penh by bus a few times but I'm wondering if many foreigners live there and if so are apartments easy to find and are they expensive to rent?

In my opinion it's an absolute dive.. stayed there 3 nights once, and done a few visa runs there. Last time I was there was 2018 maybe. Didn't come across any other westerners, didn't venture out of the city too far tho, but there was no western style bars or restaurants.. It might have changed now, I heard of a few barang lived there because of the casino. What's your reason for looking to move there?

Thanks for the information. I was thinking it might be cheaper than living in Thailand but only a few hours from Bangkok and also close to SR and Battenbang. i guess it will still be quiet after Covid but it might have improved since 2018 ????

It's a horrible border town, I have never heard anyone say anything good about it.

wife's got a aunt there so have spent some time, also knew someone, ( American) that ran a school there
LOTS of empty shophouses, lots of casinos, lots of places to rent
some decent restaurants, ( for Cambodia )
countryside only 10 minutes from town
and as you said hop skip an train to Bangkok ( 4+ hours or a 2-3 hour drive)
a Big C supermarket

cheaper than living in Thailand .... NOPE, Cambodia on the whole is NOT cheaper than thailand
note ur ONLY allowed 2 visa exempt land border entries to Thailand /year, unless ur a local khmer

the only foreigners you will see are gambling addicts and the ones that travel through non-stop. There is no reason to spend time in Poipet.
work is for people who cant find truffles

Looks like it's a big thumbs down to Poipet. Pity I was looking forward to spending my days strolling around a Big C in Cambodia LOL

I largely enjoyed my covid restricted stay there last year and yeah it was a weird time, and a tough time. I made some local friends and stuff and I had no problems. It was only 4 or 5 months. There were only a few foreigners and I only saw one other one and he told me about the other couple and I don't count Russians as foreigners.

To the OP: the Big C and that area, the Night Market, is terrific. Much more happening than PP's tired Night Market. Live bands at 2 or 3 places until late and a variety of goods and foods, Thai, Khmer etc.

Nice to know you had a reasonably nice time in Poipet bossho!

Sorry one one question, I'm not a gambler and not really interested in the casinos but I suppose they make a difference to the town's economy. So I assume they have reopened post Covid but does anyone know how they are going at the moment. I guess no Chinese customers but are the Thai punters flooding across the border?

@Funflyer I am not a gambler either. I am confident that casinos have opened back up. Poipet also has a reputation as a rip off town and that hasn't been addressed here yet. My local contacts all confirmed this so beware in all situations where you could get ripped off
My situation there last year was unique and no one came or went for many weeks so I feel like I was treated pretty well overall. It's easy to imagine that Poipet could be a real nightmare though.
