PHNOM PENH, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has recorded the highest-ever number of critically endangered white-shouldered Ibis in the Sambo Wildlife Sanctuary in northeastern Kratie province, Neth Pheaktra, secretary of state and spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, said on Tuesday.
The white-shouldered Ibis is a relatively large bird species, classified as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
The wildlife research team of the Ministry of Environment and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), with the participation of members of the local community, last week recorded a total of 330 white-shouldered Ibis with 17 roosting sites along the Mekong Flooded Forests in Sambo Wildlife Sanctuary, as their large bird monitoring effort continues as part of the national census, he said.
"This result represents the highest count ever recorded over the past 10 years in Cambodia's portion of the Mekong River," Pheaktra told Xinhua.

Cambodia Records Higher Number of Vulture in 2022
AKP Phnom Penh, September 05, 2022 --
The number of vultures recorded in Cambodia this year is higher than that of the previous year, according to the 2022 vulture survey.
The result of the last national vulture census, organised by the Cambodia Vulture Working Group (CVWG) on July 10, 2022, recorded 134 individuals, of which 19 Red-headed Vultures, 44 Slender-billed Vultures, and 71 White-rumped Vultures, a joint press release pointed out.
In the 2021 survey, there were 121 vultures, including 20 red-headed vultures, 35 slender-billed vultures and 66 white-rumped vultures.
However, the joint press release added, CVWG expressed concern about the current hunting, snaring, and poisoning that continue to occur. This pressure would lead to a significant decrease in the vulture population in the near future.
The CVWG conducts each year national vulture censuses to monitor the population trend and improve conservation actions.
CVWG is comprised of members of Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery, BirdLife, WWF, ACCB, WCS, NatureLife, Rising Phoenix, CBGA, SVC, and CBC.
All vulture species in the Kingdom are protected under the Cambodian law. The Royal Government has banned the veterinary sale and use of diclofenac (whilst harmless to cattle and other livestock, results in death of vultures if they feed on a carcass of an animal previously treated with this drug) in the country in order to safeguard the remaining Cambodian vulture population.

Two Nests of Sarus Crane Found in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary in September
AKP Phnom Penh, September 28, 2022 --
(Photos: NatureLife Cambodia)
In September this year, two nests of Sarus Crane have been discovered in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, according to NatureLife Cambodia on Sept. 27.
The two nests have 2 chicks each, aged about 4 days and 30 days, respectively, it pointed out, recalling that in early July 2022, its team also found a nest of Sarus Crane, unfortunately it was destroyed.
Raining season is the breeding period of Sarus Crane, and the biodiversity team of NatureLife Cambodia has conducted nest searching and monitoring the nest of Sarus Crane according to protocol.
For the 2022 breeding season, by Sept. 27, a total of 3 nests of Sarus Crane were discovered. This result proves that Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is playing important role in supporting and providing the nesting habitats for this vulnerable species.

International Bird Report
27 September 2022
State of the World’s Birds 2022
The latest edition of BirdLife's flagship science publication provides insights from birds on the biodiversity crisis and the solutions needed.
This fifth edition of BirdLife’s flagship State of the World’s Birds report summarises what birds, as barometers for planetary health, can tell us about the state of nature, the pressures upon it, and the solutions in place and needed. The data paint a deeply concerning picture – nearly half of all bird species are in decline, with more than one in eight at risk of extinction. The pressures causing these declines are well understood, and the vast majority are driven by human actions. The challenges to conservation are escalating, and time is running out. The coming years will be the ‘critical decade’ to act.
Fortunately, birds also tell us what actions are needed to help nature to recover, and show us that conservation action works. The report details many examples of species being saved from extinction, populations recovering, threats managed and ecosystems restored. The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework is the world’s best and perhaps last chance to halt the loss of nature. This time, governments must succeed where they have previously failed, by translating their promises into substantive action. Our future, and that of the world’s birds, depends on it.

Re: Cambodian Bird News
Cambodia has between 20 and 30 white-winged endangered ducks
Dec 14, 2022
Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: Mr. Net Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, said that in the study of Cambodian experts, Cambodia currently has 20-30 white-winged ducks, which are an endangered species in the world featuring on the IUCN Red List.
The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Environment said: "The presence of white-winged ducks in Cambodia has made Cambodia one of the nine countries in Asia where white-winged ducks live."
Mr. Neth Pheaktra said that according to the study report, there are less than 1,000 white-winged ducks in the world and very few live in Cambodia. White-winged ducks like to nest in holes in old trees.
It should be noted that according to the Angkor Center for Biodiversity Conservation in the past, the number of white-winged ducks in Cambodia is small, so in order to save this species from extinction in the country, Cambodia must have a rescue plan when these animals are in trouble, including the protection of their nests, which is very important.
Overall, more efforts are required from all parties in order to protect this species for a long time to come. V / N
