New Endangered Species Found in Kampot National Parks

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

New Endangered Species Found in Kampot National Parks

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Kampot Province): According to the study of the experts on Biodiversity of the Ministry of Environment, they have discovered 12 species of mammals, 18 species of reptiles, and 8 species of frogs; 3 species are critically endangered (CR), 2 are endangered (EN), and 2 are vulnerable (VU). In addition, many of these newly discovered creatures are likely to also be the discovery of a new species.

Thanks to the biodiversity of the areas, on January 22, 2021, the government decided to create 2 national natural parks called Phnom Preah Kuhear Hloung (25 hectares) in the north of Bonteay Meas district, Kompot province, and Phnom Totung Phnom Toch (83.44 hectares) in Dong Tung and Bonteay Meas districts, Kompot province.
On top of that, the locals benefit from the feces of the bugs-eating bats that generate an estimated $100k per annum of income.

12 species of mammals? Surely not new discoveries?

I thought the same.
Those stat’s might be the total numbers of species recorded for the first time in the area, not necessarily new discoveries?

I think you are right. 12 species of insects I can believe, but not mammals.
