Discussions about Khmer dishes are also in here, or you can leave your own. If you own a restaurant, feel free to let the expat community know about it here so that we can come check it out. Found a favorite cafe or have a place we should avoid? Tell us about it. Asian recipes & questions are always welcome.

have you been under a rock the past decade?

almost every shop, cafe, bus etc has a battery of QR codes in front of the till; I daresay up to 50% of transactions in this country are done by qr code
City boy?

I daresay half of the people in Cambodia don't even have a bank account.
30% according to official figures https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501052053/ ... -services/

Of the 70% who do a huge number are using QR and apps above cards and books, including my 70yo Mom in Law in bumfuck nowhere Kampong Cham

I guess that in Rattankiri with under 2% of the total nationwide population it may not seem that way but those are the facts
First, 'bumfuck nowhere Kampong Cham' is the fourth city in Cambodia if I recall well. Not that 'bumfuck' remote.

Second, if 2% of the Cambodian population lives in Ratanakiri another 73% lives outside the urban areas elsewhere in the country.

QR code use is on the rise for sure, but I doubt your 50% claim. I use it a lot, but I use cash a lot more. Also when in Phnom Penh or 'bumfuck nowhere Kampong Cham'.
Bumfuck nowhere kampong cham is VERY rural kampong cham - the town is a separate matter from the rather large province

Anyhow, a QR is very common everywhere rural or urban and will proliferate even more with time - even TV commercials just put a QR commonly instead of other info

doubt away lol
I live in a kind of "bumfuck nowhere", 80 km from Kampong Cham city, and I've never been asked to use a QR code. Actually, I've never seen someone using a QR code here, everything is paid in cash.

Seriously, QR codes in a country where most people don't know how to use a smart phone other than use it to search on Facebook.

No idea where you've been recently, but certainly not in Phnom Penh (unless you happen to be blind perhaps). I see people making QR code payments all the time

Leaving aside that Harry's Bar is in Phnom Penh, I just spent another week in Kampot and saw many places where you could actually pay via QR code, too.

Did it myself a few times, without any issues or strange looks, so it doesn't seem to be as uncommon as you make it sound.

Out of curiosity, would you say the same about Thailand? On my last Isaan trip, I made QR code payments even at some village mom and pop shops.

Perhaps I'm blind then because when I buy my vegies, fruit and pork at the Kandel Market or the Old Market I never ever ever see anyone paying using the QR code system. OK, maybe the guys selling coconuts from their moto carts as they move around town or the ladies on riverside selling drinks just don't display the QR code in a place where I can't see it, but you can.

Don't be silly. I didn't suggest that a coconut vendor should use QR codes instead of printed vouchers. Or that I see people buying their 2000 riel veggies at a wet market with their smartphones.

At restaurants (such as Harry's), coffee shops, mini marts and supermarkets in Phnom Penh, on the other hand, QR code payments are often an option.

Talk about derailing this topic.. QR in the boonies. QR in the markets. Locals use of QR. :offtopic:

What's that got to do with Harry's? The promo is targeted at CEO readers who are mainly barang expats and tourists.
