The khmers only buy simple food, dont buy souvenirs, dont use guides, doubt they use tuk tuks either, so there spending is very minimalarmchairlawyer wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 8:12 amOn weekends and the many public holidays, the temples are busy with Khmer tourists. So the sellers are doing OK, but they're not getting customers to pay over the odds!rozzieoz wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 7:33 am It's a brilliant idea.
The people whom have businesses inside the part are really suffering.
At least if people start going, they will buy drinks and food and other items (hopefully) from the sellers in the park.
They will share photos on social media which will hopefully encourage other tourists.
I can imagine there is great rejoicing amongst the expats in Siem Reap, they will all be able to cycle out to Angkor Wat in the afternoons to enjoy the sunset out there.
The tour guides are getting no business.

I don't think any of those points are true.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 10:27 am

They will use tuktuks (some will have cars but others won't), buy food (some of the restaurants in angkor park are fairly famous among Cambodians and not cheap). They seem to buy more souvenirs than a lot of tourists and some will use guides if going for first time.
A lot of Cambodians will use the photographers in the park and some will rent the traditional dress.
Sure, they get most things cheaper than tourist but still do it all

Yes, all true (apart from the guides). I've witnessed it. The rented traditional dress is particularly popular. Don't get many foreign visitors doing that.cautious colin wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 10:37 amI don't think any of those points are true.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 10:27 am

BTW, I hired a tour guide when I was with my Khmer gf. I asked the guide to give the guide talk in Khmer as well as English. She said sorry she did know how to say it in Khmer, and had always only spoiken the spiel in English.

It's an annual pass, no limit on visits, confirmed by MoT and Apsara Authority/Angkor Enterprises.John Bingham wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 10:16 am The wording isn't too clear on that. It could mean you can only visit once a year?
Re: Free Angkor Temple Visits
the Khmer original says "muy chnam mdong"
which translates "once a year"

Re: Free Angkor Temple Visits
"daoy men bong thlai"
"without paying"

Re: Free Angkor Temple Visits
You get a yearly pass, once a year. Seems clear enough to me.

Excellent. Can we just rock up to the ticket office with a passport and visas, or anything else needed/must be applied for elsewhere?

I don't care what it says or doesn't say. It hasn't passed Armchair's "does it feel right" test. There's going to be a catch of some sort, sooner or later.
