Cambodia News (Banteay Meanchey Province): At 3:40 pm on May 32, 2022, in Kab Chor village, Phom Thmey commune, Thmor Pouk district, 5 cows were struck to death by lightning during a heavy rainstorm. 4 of the cows belonged to Kot Sengky, a 37-year-old man, and 1 cow belonged to Kun Kon, a 40-year-old man. According to the owners, they put their cows in the shade of the trees because of the hot weather.

However, the weather changed quickly and a rainstorm approached with lightning that struck down all their cows. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident.

This might be a stupid question but how do you maintain cows so they don't get hit by lightning? Take away their umbrellas?

Aside from not tethering them to tall trees, there’s not a lot you can do to prevent unlucky strikes.

If the shelter does not have an adequate lightening conductor fitted (highly unlikely for the average rural cow herder) do you run the risk of an entire herd being taken out in a single strike?
I think it’s entirely in the hands of Mother Nature, they’re more vulnerable sheltering under trees (as are we) but plenty of strikes happed on open ground

That might seem like the obvious solution but after a couple of hours of the cows complaining about how they're bored, there's nothing on TV, they want to go outside to play etc the farmer will probably want to go outside and take his chances with the lightning himself.

Not tying them up under a fucking tree during a lighting storm would be a solid beginning
