US Citizens Claim they were "Detained" in Sihanoukville, Working for Chinese Company

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

'Daniel Wayne Scott said that during August 2019, he and his wife Retta Riama came to Cambodia through the Phnom Penh International Port and volunteered as a teacher for two years in Phnom Penh.

During January 2022, his wife met an Indonesian man and a Filipino woman, who offered them many jobs but with low salaries.

At that time, he met Ah Li, a Taiwanese man, and Jackie Trio, a Chinese man.

The two hired him to work for Jinbei 4 Computer Company.

In the first month, he was paid $ 500 and his wife $ 300.

In the second and subsequent months, he received a base salary of $ 800 and worked well for the company.

The company paid him a bonus in addition to the base salary.

Because he was worried about his wife’s health, he asked his boss to stop working, but the boss told him to meet with Jackie Trio, and when he met Jackie Trio, he became angry and used violence.

They kept making fantastic stories about why they couldn't come to work and demanding money, clothing food and paid tuk tuks

The latest from the Khmer Times:

‘Rescued’ foreigners not victims

'Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police Chief Major General Chuon Narin said yesterday the three foreigners were not detained, were not victims of human trafficking, and were not forced to work.

He said the girl friend of one of the three foreigners, an American, had called Interior Minister Sar Kheng’s team hotline to seek assistance from authorities to intervene.'
