2 Officers Charged with Village Chief's Death During Gambling Raid
Cambodia News (Kampong Thom): Eleven military police officers from Kampong Thom province were questioned in connection with a crackdown on an online gambling cafe, which resulted in the death of 47-year-old Suong Khan, the deputy village chief of Rong village, Krava commune, Baray district, Kampong Thom. .
Of those arrested, two military police officers are currently being held in custody for legal action.
1- Sok Meng Hong Than, a lieutenant and director of the Criminal Bureau,
2- Luy Tang Chuy Mean Than, the Lieutenant Colonel of the Judicial Unit.
The Royal Gendarmerie issued a press release explaining that the death of the man was caused during an operation on 9 August, where the Gendarmarie investigated and cracked down on betting on illegal online cock-fights, which took place in a cafe in Rong village, Krava commune, Baray district.
Later, it was realised that a man had died during the police raid and now the police have established who was responsible; two military police officers are currently being held in custody pending legal action.
According to the victim's family’s account, at 5 pm on the day of the incident, Mr. Suong Khan was returning from a meeting and by chance happened to take shelter from the rain at a coffee shop in which the gambling was taking place. Unfortunately, that was the moment where the police raided the premises, and it is alleged that a police officer came and grabbed the victim by the neck and held him until he could not breathe. The victim died as a result.
Locals and relatives of the victim then erupted in loud protests to investigate the death, which reached the ears of General Sao Sokha who ordered legal action immediately.
