Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan set to dominate ASEAN meet
ASEAN spokesman says it would seek to calm the waters after US House Speaker defied China to arrive on the island

Southeast Asian foreign ministers will seek ways to help calm rising tensions over Taiwan at regional talks Wednesday, after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived on the island, enraging Beijing.

Pelosi's dramatic late-night arrival in Taipei, defying threats of reprisals by China, looks set to dominate the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Phnom Penh, which had been due to focus on the bloody crisis in Myanmar.

Attention will focus instead on Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his American counterpart Antony Blinken -- both flying into the Cambodian capital for regional security talks with ASEAN on Thursday and Friday.

ASEAN spokesman Kung Phoak, Cambodia's deputy foreign minister, said the meeting would seek to calm the waters.

Lavrov arrives in Cambodia to attend ASEAN-Russia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
Official events with Russian foreign minister's participation are scheduled for August 4-5

PHNOM PENH, August 3. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on Wednesday to attend the ASEAN-Russia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, a TASS correspondent reported.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced earlier that Lavrov is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts in Phnom Penh.

Official events with Lavrov’s participation are scheduled for August 4-5. Prior to that, the Russian foreign minister visited Myanmar. Zakharova pointed out ahead of the Russian top diplomat’s tour of Southeast Asia that "Lavrov is not bringing a provocation, as [US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy] Pelosi [who visited Taiwan on August 3], but he is bringing cooperation".

VOA Interview: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
August 05, 2022 1:39 PM
Sun Narin
Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Amid soaring tensions over China's military drills in the Taiwan Strait, VOA's Khmer Service Reporter Sun Narin interviewed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Friday. Blinken told VOA that China's reaction to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan this week is "disproportionate and dangerous.” He said the United States will not respond with any provocative actions of its own.
Blinken also discussed ways to address the worsening situation in Myanmar, including possible additional sanctions. Blinken said the U.S. wants a positive relationship with Cambodia, and that he discussed the importance of strengthening democracy in the country with Cambodian Prime Minister HE, with elections set for next year.

VOA: Two questions first before we touch on the topics on Cambodia. So, one is about Taiwan and Myanmar. Just want to get your view on what do you think about the visit of Pelosi to Taiwan, and then there is a reaction and also response from China.
