If they cleared trees for the land, then surely trees would grow back there if planted ...

Alternatively, sand? Surely there's an oknha for that... #beaches :D

It is actually very sandy and arid up there. Most of the trees were quite small and all seemed to be the same variety. I'd guess that the new luxury wood trees they have planted will need a lot of care and attention if they are to thrive.

The sad part of the story is the company has asked people to help plant the saplings they have supplied to replace the trees the company cut down. The new saplings are the types that will be very valuable when mature and I wonder who is going to benefit from that. Ah, that's right, the animals.

I'd be surprised if they lasted a season in that soil.

Wildlife Alliance Appreciates Government’s Decision
AKP Phnom Penh, August 08, 2022 --

Wildlife Alliance has expressed its appreciation for the decision of the Royal Government of Cambodia to cancel development projects at Phnom Tamao Widlife Rescue Centre’s forest area in Bati district, Takeo province.

“Our Beloved people! There are so many calls to the government to preserve the forest around Phnom Tamao Zoo," Wildlife Alliance quoted as saying Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE who heard these calls and took action; revoking all deals to develop the area around the Centre.

This is a success for all Cambodia and a positive sign of the Royal Government’s commitment to forest protection, it underlined.

On hearing the news, Wildlife Alliance CEO Dr. Suwanna Gauntlett expressed her thanks to Samdech, saying “a big thank you Mr. HE. I am so happy that the wildlife populations there will keep their home. Thank you for being part of this journey and for using your voice to save the forest and wildlife of Phnom Tamao.”

Similarly Nick Marx, Wildlife Alliance’s Director of Wildlife Rescue and Care expressed his gratitude to Samdech and other key actors. “I really appreciate PM HE’s order to stop the developer and I also appreciate Leng Navatra Group for complying with PM HE’s order.”

Right, that's all the forests and trees taken care of, now maybe the same will happen with the lakes.

It's literally one tiny little forest with no old growth trees. It was just a protected area. Other forests are still "open for business". It's just nice to keep Tamao the way it is given it's the only forest left between Phnom Penh and the coast. The rest is a fairly arid wasteland come the dry season. There's also no shortage of shitty borey outlines with cement post markers demarcating the empty, uninhabited plots throughout the Kingdom.

Land-clearing in Phnom Tamao forest has stopped, yet...

18 August 2022
Cambodia: Journalists and activists detained for reporting on land clearing
Five journalists from an independent media organisation and four environmental activists were arrested while covering land clearing activity at a wildlife sanctuary in Phnom Tamao forest. The International Federation of Journalists joins its affiliate, the Cambodian Journalists Alliance Association (CamboJA), in condemning the incident and urges the Cambodian authorities to refrain from using violence against journalists and human rights activists.
