Toxic Chemicals Found in Asian Instant Noodles
Warning: Asian noodles with toxins? Consumers should be careful

Bad news for all instant noodle fans. Hazardous substances were found in numerous products in samples - they should not be dealt with lightly.
Residues of carcinogenic gas
Stuttgart, Germany - Experts from the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office Stuttgart (CVUA) found residues of the carcinogenic gas ethylene oxide in numerous instant noodle products.
In 11 of the 25 samples examined, the toxin was detectable, as the Ministry for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection announced in Stuttgart on Tuesday.
It is assumed that the fumigation of individual additives or components of the products is not permitted under EU regulations.
Products from Vietnam delivered noticeably high values, but products from Korea and China also showed residues.
In contrast, tests on samples from Thailand, Indonesia and the EU largely showed no abnormalities.
However, the ministry added that the results were not representative due to the currently low number of samples.
Nevertheless, the responsible food companies have been informed and are now called upon to take all necessary steps to remove the offending batches from the market or to recall them.
A ministry spokesman confirmed that the first companies have already been called back.
Aside from warnings from the Ministry of Rural Areas and Consumer Protection, regular consumption of instant noodles is also not recommended due to other health risks.
Toxic ingredients already found in other products
Most recently, warnings were issued against other products due to residues of ethylene oxide**.
The toxin is a gaseous disinfectant.
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment estimates the consumption of ethylene oxide as harmful and informs: “Ethylene oxide is mutagenic and carcinogenic.

The General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia (GDCE) has identified three types of instant noodles and ice cream trademarks originating from Thailand, Vietnam and France that are suspected to contain ethylene oxide, which poses a cancer risk to consumers. The general department has put in place immediate measures to recall the products and ban their sale.
The GDCE’s letter on July 29 informed the directors of the relevant branches and offices of the Customs and Excise department that recently the food safety authorities of some European Union (EU) countries have found that some instant noodles and ice cream brands originating from Thailand and Vietnam contained ethylene oxide residue, which the EU, US and the World Health Organisation (WHO) consider to be substances that pose cancer risks to consumers.
The letter continues that in order to protect public health, food safety and the welfare of consumers, the customs department is imposing temporary measures against these products.
From August 1 onwards all imports of the instant noodles “Lucky Me!” made in Thailand, “Hao Hao” noodles made in Vietnam and “Haagen-Dazs” vanilla ice cream made in France must be accompanied by a certificate of ethylene oxide analysis from the food safety inspection authority of the exporting countries.
“After several days of research, our preliminary results are that no instant noodles or ice cream products as identified in the announcement have been found in the Cambodia market yet,” he said.
