Not good news if your in the tourism industry
Ministry of Tourism: Cambodia will have to wait until 2026 or 2027 for international tourist numbers to return to the same level as in 2019
For the first six months of 2022, Cambodia received more than 500,000 international tourists, an increase of 394% compared to the same period in 2021, but still decreased -84.8% compared to the same period in 2019 (before the crisis).
Cambodia is expected to receive around 1 million international tourists in 2022 and about 2 million in 2023, the year that Cambodia will host the 32nd SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

It’s good that they’re comparing against relevant periods. Several recent assessments, worldwide too, have compared with enthusiasm the increase year on year. No doubt with lots of folk patting themselves on the back for how well they’ve done. Forgetting the inconveniences in between- like COVID!phuketrichard wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 11:44 am For the first six months of 2022, Cambodia received more than 500,000 international tourists, an increase of 394% compared to the same period in 2021, but still decreased -84.8% compared to the same period in 2019 (before the crisis).

Not just Cambodia. I am currently sitting at the airport in HCMC, on the way to Siem Reap, and the place is dead. With inflation, war, petrol prices, I think the tourism industry around the globe will take years to fully recover. And Freight Dog is right here: in the Vietnam Airlines onboard flight magazine they were in about how much business has increased last year. But an 80% increase from almost zero is not really that much.

I think Asia is taking the biggest hit. I think in many parts of Europe numbers are not that much weaker than 2019. In Spain in May-June tourist arrivals were 90% of the 2019 same period numbers and July and August they are predicting to be even higher. My apartment in Spain has been fully booked already from May till September which has never happened in 6 years I have owned it. And I have able to get much higher nightly rates as well.hanno wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 1:53 pm Not just Cambodia. Re: Not good news if your in the tourism industry
I am currently in Da Lat and the number of whiteys around certainly is a lot less than pre covid. I don't mind as I don't come to VN to meet other foreigners. Hotel occupancy is low but the number of local lookey loos I see wandering around seems as high as it ever was. Tour buses galore but I don't know where everyone is staying. Prices for food are at least 30% higher in stores but the restaurants seem to have eaten (no pun intended) a lot of this because their prices are not much higher. I think the pandemic decimated the taxi industry here too. Lots of cabs but seems to be only about half as many as pre 2020.
As for the HCMC airport, glad to hear it. I fly out in 3 weeks and the place is often a nightmare of crowds and lineups. Looking forward to not having to go through that again!

As if low tourist travel is not enough. Hospitality industry workers in Vietnam and elsewhere are reluctant to return to work after all the start-and-stop interruptions of business due various government interventions. Employers in the Vietnam hospitality industry are crying about massive staff shortages.
Clumsy headline: Staff shortage a spoke in Vietnam’s tourism wheel

The lack of worker enthusiasm is also infecting North America and cutting into tourism as unprecedented airport delays are forcing airlines to slash flights and authorities to trim regulatory functions to speed up passenger handling. It's barely working. One former airline executive in Canada said to expect huge delays at least through September.
These things will discourage a lot of travel for some time to come, especially to Asia. And let's not forget the soaring airfares.

Re: Not good news if your in the tourism industry
The italian tourism industry has MASSIVE problems to recruit staff in the hospitality sector as most former employees have found work in other industries during COVID. The international tourist numbers are down 20% only from the peak in 2019. But most italians prefer to spend holidays within the country instead of abroad so the TOTAL number of tourists is near 2019 peak.ExPenhMan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 4:33 pm As if low tourist travel is not enough. And someone believes a major driving force for tourism is the gambling industry. Maybe someone needs to realise that at least 90% of present tourists probably don't gamble or ever visited a casino. What a shame they're not making money!

Here in HCMC, trying to book a taxi or Grab during peak times is ridiculous - sometimes 30 minute waits for a 20 minute ride. It's been reported that many drivers have stopped driving since gas prices went up, since they're on the hook for those and the companies are still taking what they've always taken.johnny lightning wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 4:07 pm I am currently in Da Lat and the number of whiteys around certainly is a lot less than pre covid.
