No Water: Farmers Plead for Help to Save Rice Harvest
Svay Rieng Farmers Beg for Help to Save Rice Crop Harvest
Cambodia News Phnom Penh, (Svay Rieng Province): Many hectares of seasonal rice in Thmey commune, Kampong Ror District, Svay Rieng Province are facing damage due to a lack of irrigation water at a time when the rice is gradually flowering.
Farmers who own the rice crops have appealed to the relevant officials to help dig and restore canals to save the rice crops, because they cannot afford to pump water into the canals to save the rice, as the cost of doing so is beyond their means. Even if the crops were sold now, no profit could be made either.
Regarding the farmers' request, we have not been able to obtain an explanation from Mr. Kim Savuth, Director of Svay Rieng Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, but Mr. Tep Saron, First Deputy Chief of Thmey Commune, confirmed with us that rice production is increasing during this season. This has caused a real impact to rice production in the new commune, especially in Koh Trach and O Villages. Although there are many canals dug around the commune, some canals are dry and have no water flowing through them at all.

There's a very old lesson learned! The city of Angkor comes to mind.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

When's the rainy season going to start?
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

No shortage of rain in the northern provinces. In fact record rainfall for the early wet season months.

Not in the Northeast. No shortages but my baby tomatoes are still not planted in the soil because several days of torrential sunshine without a drop of water are common. I even have to give water to the young coconut palms I planted months ago.Calypso dancer wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 7:33 pm No shortage of rain in the northern provinces. Fair enough Kammekor. Not the north east. It's the north and north west that's taken the brunt of the rain.

Banteay Meanchey rice farmers are also suffering from drought conditions
Cambodia News, (Banteay Meanchey Province): As of June 30 2022, Chea Ty, chief of Seur commune, said that until today, farmers who grow rice are short of water to irrigate rice. More than 3,000 hectares are affected and more than 1,000 rice fields are damaged in Mongkul Borei district, both west of the river and east, from lack of water.
He confirmed that more than 3,000 hectares of rice in Seur commune will be affected if there is no rain next week; there are concerns that much of the 2022 rice harvest may be permanently damaged.
Mr. Chea Ty confirmed that for almost a month now, there has been no heavy rain, and there has only been light rain twice. The amount of water that flows through the main canal is very limited, so only the farmers next to the canal can pump it to irrigate their rice. As for those who are far away, there is no water to irrigate rice at all, and when they open the canal, the water will be divided into many different communes.
