Those Living Cheaply Under a Grand

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Wow. This guy has seen as much as Felger and LTO. Keep the stories coming, taabarang. Tell us about Cambodia in 1996.

I've been offered good paying seasonal work with a friend each year, however, that wouldn't start until October, and well, I'd prefer not having to be here any longer than absolutely necessary to be honest. I've lived most of the last ten or eleven years in SEA and find returning to Australia sterile, predictable and tedious.

The more I think about it the more I realize I may just have to suck it up here until I've enough to cover $1250 a month in Cambodia even if it means hanging around until the end of the year. *shudder*

Even though $1250 doesn't give you a Hollywood lifestyle, it's enough. And as much as I'd like to reduce that cost of living so as to get out of here faster, I don't think I want to sacrafice the standard of living over there I'm used to.
For what it's worth, I'm not an Aussie, but I have two Aussie friends who make a fortune driving trucks seasonally. Companies up in mining country and the hinterlands can't get enough drivers. You might take a course and get in the driver's seat.

Now I've caught Taabarang's story by accident, having previously ignored this $1,000 budget thread. Which leads to think the obvious: a separate thread.

I rented a bamboo 5 room house for 200 baht a month in battambang providence. ( no running water or bathroom). Great time and a good way to live and learn about the locals as I was a new to the country then.
I now live on $350. a month and we save the rest. We now live a great middle class existence in Ta Khmao with private little house and garden on the river. If it was not for my wife doing the shopping, etc it would cost me much more. I never go with out

great old stories.

MY first foray into Cambodia was in 1987 and entailed walking across the border near my home in Bo Rai for 2 days with Khmer rouge escorts to the gem mines south of Pailin.
WE would stay for 4-5 days and than walk back out.
KR took 50% of our finds but we still made a shit load of $$$$

This not a country where is pays to show disrespect to anyone, especially the Prime Minister, political viewpoints not withstanding. If someone messed with my text, STOP IT.
The PM's name apparently 'translates' to just that, try the 'Preview' -button, and you'll see.
I agree with you, it's not done to show disrespect, like you said political viewpoints not withstanding.

Admins? Maybe change that to HE or something?
