Dairy Farming in Cambodia

Cambodia’s newest dairy farm offers vision of tech-driven agriculture
Cambodia's agricultural sector is still heavily reliant on traditional, and inefficient, methods of cultivation. But the Kingdom's newest dairy farm, Kirisu, offers a vision of how technology could play a bigger role in helping the ailing sector offer better yields

The farms of rural Cambodia don’t usually evoke images of milkmaids and butter churns. But then, maybe that’s to be expected in a country where much, if not most of the population is lactose intolerant.

Even in that context, a mixed group of Cambodian and Israeli entrepreneurs are placing a major bet on finding green pastures ahead for the local dairy industry. On a recent morning, Chy Sila and Uri Rahamim navigated potholed roads to make a regular visit to Kirisu Farm, a 300 hectare spread about 35 km outside Phnom Penh and the newest entry to the domestic production side of an otherwise import-dominated Cambodian dairy industry.

The farm only started producing milk in July, but with a bullish initial investment of about $10 million and more than 500 cows and counting, the dairy entered the market as Cambodia’s largest producer of fresh milk, pumping out as much as 8,000 litres of the white stuff per day. As the cows continue to adjust to life in Cambodia, Sila said the farm hopes to bump up daily production to 12,000 litres.

Kirisu now joins the country’s two other dairies, Moo Moo Farms, just across the Mekong from Phnom Penh, and Techo Sen Russey Treb Milk, in Preah Vihear province, both of which produce on a less industrial scale.

Cambodians have no traditional uses for dairy in their cuisine, preferring coconut milk to whatever comes out of an udder, and so a herd of imported, pregnant black-and-white Australian Holsteins may seem an odd investment. But for Sila, a prominent Cambodian businessman who oversees a portfolio of companies such as Sabay Digital Media and CBM Corporation, a major food and beverage franchisee, Kirisu Farm is the realisation of a much broader goal of agricultural modernisation.

Meanwhile, ethnic Khmer farmers in Vietnam are successfully raising cattle for dairy and meat:

Soc Trang develops cattle farming
VNA Monday, July 12, 2021 15:20

Soc Trang (VNA) – Cattle breeding has long been the strength of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, contributing to raising the living conditions of many local households, especially those belonging to the Khmer ethnic minority group.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as a Mekong Delta locality that has a hot and humid climate and is less prone to flooding, Soc Trang is very convenient for cow farming.

Thanks to the province’s project on dairy farming development for 2013-2020, by the end of 2020, the total herd of dairy cows in the province had reached more than 10,000 heads, over 5,300 heads higher than that in 2013.

Meanwhile, local households are raising 44,000 heads of beef cattle. The traditional husbandry has generated jobs to over 15,000 locals in rural and Khmer-inhabited areas, thus contributing to poverty reduction and agricultural development.

Vuong Quoc Nam, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that in the coming time, the locality will continue developing cattle farming projects, and increasing State management in carrying out the projects.

He stressed the need to pay more attention to high-efficient husbandry models./.

Australia Supports Fresh Milk Production in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, April 04, 2022 --

Australian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Pablo Kang and Senior Trade Commissioner Mrs. Rebecca Ball late last week visited Kirisu Farm in Bati district, Takeo province to see some of the 550 Holstein cows brought across from Australia to start Cambodia’s first large scale local dairy.

According to Australian Embassy in Cambodia, through CAVAC, the programme is supporting Kirisu Farm to upgrade their dairy products to obtain international Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) 22000 and linked the farm with local farmers to help grow fodder as cow feed.

Kirisu is now producing 12,000 litres of high grade milk a day as well as yoghurt and other delicious products which H.E. Ambassador had a chance to sample, it pointed out.

Increased availability of locally produced, high quality milk will promote good nutrition and healthy development for Cambodian kids, the same source added.

“And with 900 calves already born in Cambodia since the dairy commenced operations, we hope to see a successful dairy industry growing here with Aussie heritage,” said the embassy.
