Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Workers at CamSport protest over payment

Over 10,000 workers at CamSport, one of Cambodia’s biggest sports equipment makers, staged a protest in Kampong Chhnang province yesterday over payment delays.

In a statement, the garment workers said the company did not give them overtime pay and urged the employer to respect their rights and provide proper working conditions. The workers, protesting in Samakki Meanchey district, said they will boycott work until a solution was found.

The statement said employees were forced to work overtime and the company did not allow the sale of some types of food in front of the factory.

It said that the non-violent strike was not incited by any organisation or party and the protest was aimed at bringing pressure on the employer to address the grievances, the statement said.
Workers said they understand that the company needs to make a profit, but workers should not be made to suffer.

Garment workers protest in front of US embassy seeking compensation from ex-employer

At least 100 garment workers held a demonstration in front of the American Embassy today seeking compensation from Canetran Apparel [Cambodia] Co,. LTD factory, which was closed down without giving any reason or the payment to the workers.

The factory is located in Porsenchey district’s Choam Chao I commune, in Phnom Penh. As many as 320 workers lost their jobs and they allege the company was sold to US retail giant Wal-Mart.

Pav Sina, president of Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW) said that the workers today submitted a petition to the American Embassy seeking an intervention as the new buyer is an American company.

“We came to known that Wal-Mart bought Canetran Appare,” Sina told Khmer Times.

He added that the workers have already submitted a petition to the Labour and Vocational Training Minister Ith Samheng in May.
