I would think that the title of the thread should fit the story - Early movement home for Khmer new year.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Thai military detains nearly 100 Cambodian migrant workers in Kork Khyung and Aranya districts

Cambodia News, Thailand: With the Khmer New Year over, hundreds of Cambodian workers are now illegally entering Thailand in droves each day. This is possible due to the systematic collusion between brokers and some border authorities in exchange for money, despite the risk of danger.

At dawn on April 30, 2022, soldiers of the Thai Armed Forces patrolled and monitored the area in charge of Nong Maing village, Nong Veng commune, Kork Khuong district, Sa Kaeo province, and stopped two vehicles coming from behind Nang Maing village. According to the above source, the Thai police inspected the first car and found 15 Cambodian workers, including 9 men and 6 women, then the police inspected the second car and found 24 Cambodian workers, including 11 men, 13 women and children.
Accompanied by two guides, they were smuggled across the border to work in construction in some provinces in Thailand. After questioning, the authorities sent all Cambodian workers to Kork Khuong station for legal action.

Thailand aims to legalise Cambodian migrant workers as well as those from three other nations

The Thai Labour Ministry is looking to legalise undocumented migrants working in the kingdom’s service sector amid high demand for imported labour.

If the plan is approved, some illegal workers from neighbouring Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam will be given an opportunity to register to work legally in Thailand.

The special registration, believed to benefit about 50,000–60,000 already working in the country, will begin two weeks after the cabinet approves a resolution on the matter by the ministry’s committee on migrant worker management, said Pairoj Chotikasathien, director-general of the Department of Employment.

Mr Pairoj was speaking after a committee meeting chaired by Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin.

The panel is targeting illegal workers in the service industry, including those working in restaurants, Mr Pairoj said.

It remains unclear as to when the proposal will be forwarded to the cabinet for endorsement.

Poj Aramwattananont, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and a member of the committee, said the move will benefit employers looking to upgrade the legal status of their migrant workers.

“When registered, these workers will be able to work legally in Thailand until Feb 13 next year and then be allowed to have their work permits renewed each year until Feb 13, 2025,” Mr Poj said.

In addition, to ease migrant registration, the Interior Ministry and the Immigration Bureau will next work together to lower the visa fee for these workers from 2,000 baht to 500 baht, he said.

A report released on the situation of workers at the Cambodian-Thai border revealed that in the past seven months, there have been more than 40,000 Cambodian workers from Thailand returning home via the Battambang border.

Local authorities stated that residents of the two districts in Battambang that borders Thailand have been entering the country illegally.

“In the seven months from January 1 to July 20, 2022, more than 40,000 Cambodian workers with two local residences on the Thai border returned home,” said the report.

Thailand needs 500,000 more migrant workers for recovery: Chamber of Commerce
Thailand is short more than half a million migrant workers, the country's Chamber of Commerce said on Tuesday, as Southeast Asia's second-largest economy struggles with a slow post-pandemic recovery.

Demand for workers is high in labour-intensive sectors including agricultural goods and food processing for exports, construction, and tourism and services, Poj Aramwattananont, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, told a news conference.

"Today, workers are a big issue for driving the economy," he said, adding the country would need a total of at least 3 to 4 million migrant workers to get the economy moving forward.

Barriers to recruiting migrant workers include problems in their home countries such as civil unrest in Myanmar, and competition for workers from other countries like Japan and China, Poj said.

At present, there are about 2.5 million documented migrant workers from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, Pairoj Chotikasathien, head of the Labour Ministry's employment department, told the conference.

In a bid to ease the shortage, the cabinet last week approved labour management plans including allowing documented workers to stay until February 2025, he said.

Thailand will also allow illegal workers, this time including those from Vietnam, to be registered and work until February 2025, Pairoj said.

With the improved labour plans and arrival of more workers, Thailand may see nearly 3 million migrant workers at the end of the year, he said.

Phuket
few friends own construction companies, none can get good thai laborer's for under 1,000 baht/day while Burmese /Cambodians work for 4-500

7/11 pays 11,000-15,000 baht/month, so what thai will work on a construction site for the same?
